vitiligo in kids

Does anyone have any suggestions for treating vitiligo in children? We are trying to avoid the harsh steroid creams doctors prescribe due to their side effects. Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Inshallah things will work out, we are hoping and praying for the best.

Re: vitiligo in kids

I 'll be praying for your little one. It is certainly hard to be in such a situation.

I have not known any kid with such condition but in my family a skin disease is very common. It is as painful as it looks. My family members have got some relief by homeopathic medicine. I am not in favor of them at all but if you know someone who is a good homeo it can be a worth try.

On the other hand I would just advise you something that you have not asked for. Take your little one for umra , pray hard over there , make your child drink zam zam water who knows Allah bestows His blessings and gives shafa.

I have never heard of steroid creams being prescribed for vitiligo......very interesting.

I do know that homeopathic treatments can be quite successful.

Re: vitiligo in kids

There is no known cure for vitiligo. Michael Jackson used some rather "out there" treatments and got some results...but you really need to evaluate the results with the price he paid for them as far as emotional and physical side-effects from all the different drugs, treatments etc. He got an even skin-tone eventually but he really ended up looking odd. And even still suffered greatly about how he looked.

The very best thing you can do for your little one is to nurture self-respect and self-esteem. Everyone looks different. The most important part of being human is to accept others for their differences and to take pride in themselves and who they are as people. Some horses have spots, some have stripes, some are single-colored...and they all come in many colors of the rainbow. But thats only "window dressing"....its whats inside that counts. Start to instill this in your child and all his friends and all will be fine.

Re: vitiligo in kids

I know someone whose kid has vitilligo and just started the treatment(some topical cream) and it hasn't really worked so far it's been a month or so. I completely AGREE with Mamaof3, I think you need to accept your child as s/he is knowing this skin problem probably won't go away. Don't shield the kid from other people or you're really going to hurt his/her self image and confidence. IMO, a child with a skin problem is much better than a child who lacks self esteem and confidence!!

My little cousin started having vitiligo few years back. I think she was 5-6 years old when it started. She was started on the creams. She ended up with a lot of pinkish-white patches on her skin. This caused a lot of self-esteem issues for her. No matter how much we would tell her she was beautiful anyway, she wouldn't go out unless covering her chin with her turtleneck sweater - even in extreme summer! It was really hard on her! But her head-teacher was so so so sweet, Mashallah she gave a special assembly to the school about vitiligo.

So when my cousin's condition returned, her dermatologist told her not to take any more meds as they were too strong and she was too young. It started to take over and now her skin is one even colour, even though its ghostly pink-white. But I've heard that this doesn't happen to everyone where it completely covers your body. But she's happy now she doesn't have patches anymore. Of course the big side-effect is that her skin is super sensitive to heat even when she makes an egg or when the hot oven is opened near her but this is out of her control.

She tried homeopathic medicine and herbal meds' but that didn't work on her but most prob' b/c she was on other meds at the same time. Also some of the treatments weren't appropriate for her b/c she was so young when it started.

But defo' take your child to a dermatologist for advice.

Salaam.
Thanks for the words of advice. I agree that focusing on her self image is the most important thing. However, I also feel that I have to at least try to find a treatment. She is a child, so she certainly cannot help herself. I do not want to expose her to unduly harsh medications and drugs. I have been advised by some, even my doctor, that some people have had a great deal of success with homeopathic options. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions regarding homeopathic options I would love to hear about it. I realize there is no cure, and what will be will be, but I figure I should at least try whatever options are available. Thanks for your help.

Re: vitiligo in kids

Book a consultation with a homeopathic doc or ask your GP to refer you to one.
