what are the diff vitamins one shd take each day?
So far, i got Vit C and E… wat abt Folic acid, and eye-health vitamins? are htey any useful, esp the latter?
The vitamin aisle at CVS is so confuzzling, not to mention expensive! :frowning:

Re: Vitamins

Sara, ask your doctor about which vitamins you may be lacking. Everyone one needs different ones depending on their diet and family health history. Vitamin C and E are important, but imo a basic multi-vitamin like centrum should be good enough.

Re: Vitamins

no no noooo.. ask a doctor before you take anything!! you dont need to take a whole different bunch of them. too much of something can really effect your body bad. like too much iron can effect your livers bad.

Re: Vitamins

as of now, if you really wanna take something until you see a doctor, you can get solo day from gnc.. it's not pricey at all (about 3-4 bucks) and has basically anything and everything. but again, thats light dosage until your doctor determines what you should really take.

Re: Vitamins

There are hundreds of vitamins divided in categories, sub categories and small groups. One needs to do some homework before deciding to which Vitamins he/she would like to go for. It all depends which kind of deficiency and symptoms one is suffering from !!

Re: Vitamins

Sara you do not need to take those individual vitamins...specially Vitamins C and E.....If you drink one glass of orange juice in the morning or just eat some fruits during the day that should suffice daily intake for vitamin C. Same with vitamin E, our desi foods contain enough of that. If you really want to take some bits, just take regular centrum or 'one a day'. The only thing I would ask the doctor is about vitamin D that most women need for their bones which will benefit you once you hit 40.

Re: Vitamins

are those one a day vitamin pills good? Thats what I take. When I remember to.

Re: Vitamins

^Femme I do not see any harm in taking them...I used to take same one a day for 'women' since I was 20. Centrum is also good.

Re: Vitamins

my doc says you need one tablet each of the all-in-one formula’s daily… like “women’s one a day”, and you need 1 tablet of calcium. thats it.

isn’t folic acid mainly if you’re trying to get pregnant?

this tells you what overdosing on certain vits can do to you-

A standard multivitamin supplement doesn't come close to making up for an unhealthy diet. It provides a dozen or so of the vitamins known to maintain health, a mere shadow of what's available from eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Instead, a daily multivitamin provides a sort of nutritional safety net.
While most people get enough vitamins to avoid the classic deficiency diseases, relatively few get enough of five key vitamins that may be important in preventing several chronic diseases. These include:
  • Folic acid
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
A standard, store-brand, RDA-level multivitamin can supply you with enough of these vitamins for under $40 a year. It’s about the least expensive insurance you can buy.

Re: Vitamins

***Do not take synthetic Vitamins especially ‘C’ and ‘E’, best taken in natural form like vitamin ‘C’ is in Oranges, Lemon /Lime and also Kiwi; also chicken soup…

best source for natural vitamin ‘E’ is …Wheat Germ

Yes also check out Dr. Nicholas Perricone a Harvard MD skin specialist’s book and website, he mentions the role of Alpha Lipoic Acid in delivery of the key vitamins to the individual cells of the body…

if the vitamins do not get delivered to the cells…:frowning:

they just get flushed out…:frowning:

here is interesting website:

Re: Vitamins

Ok for those of u recommending 1-a-days..wat abt teh One-a-day weight smart ones? Wat xactly r those? i know they're not diet pills but wat do they do that regular vitamins won't?

Re: Vitamins

I take Centrum's A to Zinc multi-vitamin supplement daily each morning and I think every woman should take it coz it's very good for our health. :)

Re: Vitamins

I don't drink juice, my nurse + doc told me that even after food, one needs those supplements. =/

Re: Vitamins

yeah, like that harvard article i posted above says, you might not be getting the full range of vitamins that are good for you with whatever you're eating, so a multivit is good.

as for juice, well, i'd drink all natural juice that you squeeze yourself-- although even that has so much sugar-- so you still can't be drinking tons of juice a day without doing yourself harm.

sara, the one a day website explains the difference between their vits...

the weight control one says:

  • Supports Heart Health with Vitamins B6, B12, C, E and Folic Acid* † Compared to One A Day® Essential

**
and the Regular "one a day" says:**

  • Bone Strength with more† Calcium, more† Vitamin D and Magnesium
  • Breast Health with more† Vitamin D
  • Heart Health with Vitamins B6, B12, C, E and Folic Acid
  • A Healthy Reproductive System with Folic Acid, Magnesium, Zinc and Calcium. Provides nutritional support during PMS and menopause. *]Healthy Skin with Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Copper and Iron † Compared to One A Day Essential, and with twice the Calcium & Vitamin D as Centrum® for bone strength and breast health

Re: Vitamins

I take the Viactiv multivitamin (chocolatey :D). I use to take Centrum but I saw the gelatin content, so I changed.

I think it's important to have folic acid in particular if you're planning kids soon.

Re: Vitamins

so uh yeah i’m leaning towards the folic acid and eye health vitamins :halo:. yall know anything abt the eye health ones? any useful?

Re: Vitamins

oooh, are ya having babies soon? ;)

Re: Vitamins

NO! Now will someone answer hte Q abt eye health vits??

Re: Vitamins

it really depends if you have any definiciancy or you know you are lacking that certain vitamin in food everyday...then it is recommended. One tablet of multivitamin is so far best to cover off daily supplements.

Re: Vitamins

I think most any daily multivitamin is fine for most people who eat a balanced diet. I know there are many multi-vitamins now with specific focus - like weight loss formula or eye health or energy. But the most important vitamins are found in just about all daily multis and the rest is just "peed out" (sorry but thats the truth lol). I use one-a-day "all day energy" multi and I have to say that it does give an extra boost (probably placebo effect lol).

Anyway, its much better to just choose a daily multivitamin rather than separate vitamins. Some are not excreted and it can be a bad thing to take too much, some you dont need to take so your money is going down the toilet literally. Add extra folic acid when trying to conceive and thruout pregnancy, thats all you really need unless bloodwork tells you otherwise.
