Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

ok guys..i’ve been using windows vista home premium for almost 2 years now..which came installed on my laptop. It’s working perfect .. there’s no problems with the windows im currently running.. However, i just got a hold of windows vista ultimate edition and business edition.. i was thinking of re-installing my windows for a change… which edition of vista will you recommend ?.. which one can i use to have my laptop running even more faster? its just the performance of the windows im looking for.. I use windows for normal stuff such as chatting, downloading movies, checking emails, studies purposes…ms word, excel,p.point ..etc… which one of the edition would be a good option? remember… the faster the performance of the edition, the better..

Re: Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

If you want performance, and better operation time go with 64-Bit version of windows.

But make sure your CPU/Motherboard supports running 64-Bit OS.

I've only used Ultimate from the beginning, so besides it having extra features, i'm not sure if it has any performance perks. My hunch is that the major difference between different editions is the perks/features that come loaded with OS (home vs. ultimate vs. business, etc.) and not necessarily performance.

Re: Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

thank you for ur response. What kind of extra features comes with ultimate edition? and do those features slow down the system?

How do i figure out if my motherboard will be supporting 64-bit OS? Also, will 64-bit OS give me any kind of problem when installing softwares on my system??

Re: Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

Your motherboard user’s manual would tell you. Or you can go to the manufacturer website and look up motherboard specs and see if it support 64-Bit CPU, If it does, then it supports 64-Bit OS as well. Then you just need to make sure your CPU supports 64-Bit OS, and again, you can do a search on the type of CPU you have and it will tell you whether or not it supports 64-Bit.

If you can post your laptop model no. and stuff, maybe we can help you figure that out.

As for side-by-side comparison, follow the link below. It gives you a side-by-side comparison of all 4 editions (Home Basic; Home Premium; Business; Ultimate) with Ultimate being the supreme of them all with all features included.

The editions you’re considering don’t particularly have any features that would “slow” it down or speed it up. Because after Vista Home Basic, all other editions come with Aero Theme (which is what would require Ram/Cpu power). So they’re pretty much equal in that sense. Otherwise, it’s about the features that are included.

Have a look, i hope it’ll help you decide.

Maybe some else can also shed some light on performance part of Vista, but i think i’ve stated it correctly as far as i know.

PS: For better performance, Aero Theme can be turned off. Just FYI.

Also state your computer specs. Vista requires at the very least 1GB of Ram, 2GB is recommended.

Re: Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

Performance is relative to the intended use and hardware resources. All those fancy features do eat up system resources and reduce "performance", if those features are related to your daily work then you should upgrade, otherwise it's gonna be an over kill and waste of system resources.
If you use your computer for browsing, emails and studies; and don't run some specific applications related to your field of study which need extra computing power, then I guess you are better off with VISTA home in classic mode. It will give you better performance than VISTA Ultimate running in Aero theme on a not-too-high-specs 64-bit machine.

Re: Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

And if you do run some specific application, then you need to check their compatibility with 64-bit operating system 1st.

Re: Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

If your laptop came installed with Vista, then it will surely x64 architecture. and will support 64 bit OS. It will immediately give you a performance boost.

Re: Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

ok guys i've installed windows vista ultimate. Its just like home premium. I dont see any difference between the two.Running faster, as was expected... Anyhow, its better to have a clean windows once after a while. However, after installing, all of the drivers were found automatically.. some of which i searched on the web and found them.. but when i go to device manager, under "other devices" i see a driver still needs to be installed for " Base System Device ".. thats all the information its giving me over there.. base system device. Now i dont know what to write on google to search for this device.. any clues?

Re: Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

The missing driver will be found on your original drivers disk that came with your laptop.

Pop the cd in drive, right click on the device/driver that is showing as uninstalled (by going to Device Manager)

Right-click on device without driver (Base System Device), click update drivers, and when it asks you whether it should look automatically, or search in a specific location. Just click the manual option and direct the wizard to your CD/DVD drive..it will search for and should find the appropriate drive within it. Then install, hopefully.

Re: Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

well i dont have the driver disk with me.. anyhow.. the missing of that driver doesnt seem to be creating any problem for me...

But heres the last problem from my side..once u people can help me resolve it, im a happy man.

When i was installing vista.. i created partition of one hddrive.. it was 140gb all in one drive.. so i did partition of 70/70.. out of which one drive.. the vista is installed..however, the other 70GB isnt showing on my computers.. when i was creating partition, it showed as unallocated partition.. any way i can get that partition on my computers?

Re: Vista Home premium vs ultimate vs. business

Go to the laptop maker's website, and you can download up to date drivers for your laptop under Support. That should take care of that.

As for partition, go into disk management, and click on the empty partition, i think it needs to be made active for you to see it and use it. You can make it active by right-clicking, and then there should be an option there. I'm not 100% sure about this
