Visiting London

Assalam Alaikum,

I will be travelling from Vancouver to Karachi in the middle of February and have a 1 day stop over in London. This will be my first trip to London (have been there before but never left the airport) and would like to do some sight-seeing and etc. My questions is in regards to staying, and eating halal.

I guess have two options, I can either stay closer to Heathrow and take public transportation into the city to do sightseeing and to eat halal food or I can stay in the city and catch the early morning tube or Heathrow express to catch my flight. Which would you suggest and if in downtown, can you tell me any decent $100 hotels closer to the train station. I am not familiar with the city and dont want to end up getting stuck in a bad neighborhood,

Any advice/suggestion will be appreciated.

Re: Visiting London

I think its better if you get a hotel near Heathrow, its a decent area and there are many available, you should be able to get a room within $100. Central London hotels are likely to be more expensive. Expedia is your friend here. You can easily grab the Heathrow express that would be take you to Paddington in 15-20 minutes. For sightseeing there are a lot of options, you could take an open top bus tour or you could buy an all zones travelcard and explore the city yourself. As for halal you won’t have a problem with that, halal should be available at your hotel plus there are a lot of halal chicken shops, doner shops, etc. and many Subways are halal too. You can always get yourself a filet-o-fish from Mcdonald’s in case you can’t find halal food but in a city like London that won’t be an issue at all.

Re: Visiting London

Since it's just one day, I'd stay close to the airport. There are hotels in all price ranges. I wouldn't want to be dragging my luggage into central and back.

It's really easy to get into central London otherwise - spend the day there, come back late night to crash for the flight the next morning.

Edgware Road which is fairly central should fulfil all your halal meat food needs.

Re: Visiting London

**i think u may check in ur bags directly to karachi and u won't have have luggage to carry it around except ur carry on.

i think u'll be better off staying closer to the airport and take the Day Sight-Seeing tour by Bus. u'll see more places in short time that u've and u'll also have a tour guide. u may try YMCA rooms which are cheaper or student hostels.

Good Luck!**

Re: Visiting London

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I have confirmed with my travel agent and my luggage will go direct to Karachi. I will only have a backpack with me so this shouldn't be an issue. I agree that I should stay closer to the airport because my flight leaves @ 9:30 AM and I have been advised that I should be ready to check in by 7:30.

Re: Visiting London

Re: Visiting London

I go to Pakistan almost every year but i usually go via Hong Kong or Beijing. My last trip was back in August 2010 via Beijing. I have traveled via London before too but this will be the first time that I will be actually spending some time in the city.
