Viruddh/Sarkar

‘Chhora Ganga kinarewala’ takes to the ghats

Mumbai: After over three decades in Bollywood, superstar Amitabh Bachchan takes a fancy in portraying out and out ‘‘mee Mumbaikar’’ characters in two back-to-back films.

The just-released ‘‘Sarkar’’ saw the Big B as the protagonist Subhash Nagre, a character with some shades of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s persona, while in ‘‘Viruddh’’, releasing later this month, he will be seen as a typical middle class Maharashtrian father fighting the system to seek justice for his dead son.

‘‘Sarkar’’ is produced by Ram Gopal Varma’s company Factory, while ‘‘Viruddh’’ is a Mahesh Manjrekar-directed film produced by Big B’s company A B Corp to be released on July 22.

Bachchan stars opposite Censor Board chief Sharmila Tagore, who makes a comeback in films after a long hiatus.

In ‘‘Viruddh’’, Bachchan plays Vidyadhar Patwardhan, resident of Vile Parle East, a pre-dominant middle class Maharashtrian locality in the suburbs.

It may be recalled that the megastar had inaugurated the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Sammelan at Dombivali near here in January this year. In his brief speech in Marathi, he acknowledged the influence Marathi-speaking people had cast on him througout his life in Mumbai.

Last year, in Farhan Akhtar’s film ‘‘Lakshya’’, Amitabh had essayed the brief role of Col Sunil Damle and had mouthed a Marathi proverb in one of his dialogues.

As Subhash Nagre in ‘‘Sarkar’’, he speaks one or two lines in Marathi – ‘‘Thamba (wait)’’, ‘‘Kai Zala (What happened)’’, ‘‘Kay Challay (what’s happening)’’.

But, movie buffs who saw the film felt that even though the ambience of the family in ‘‘Sarkar’’ was Maharashtrian, the ethos was missing. This could be attributed to the background of the director Ram Gopal Varma who hails from Andhra Pradesh.

Perhaps, Mahesh Manjrekar as a Maharashtrian would be able to capture the quintessential ethos in ‘‘Viruddh’’, they say.

Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan had made a special appearance in a Marathi film ‘‘Akka’’ produced by Big B’s make-up man Deepak Sawant in 1994. Amitabh and Jaya appeared in the movie in a Ganpati ‘‘aarti’’ in Marathi.

The superstar’s special appearance, however, did not help the film which sank without a trace.

Sarkar

How is this movie?

Sarkar versus The Godfather

“ The Godfather has been a film that has influenced me a lot. And I have waited 25 long years (I read the novel 25 years ago) to make Sarkar . But I am very glad that I waited this long. May be I needed maturity and experience to understand the intricacies involved. When I mention The Godfather as my inspiration, there are a lot of references to the film, like the premise, etc. Sarkar , however, is set in an Indian milieu. Also, The Godfather is about a man who uses the loopholes in the legal system to get his things done behind the conmen’s back whereas Sarkar does it in the open. He dispenses justice to the people without any authority but because of his tremendous mass popularity and charisma even the outlaws can’t do anything about it. Sarkar , unlike The Godfather is not an underworld film. There is a difference between an underworld criminal and Sarkar’s character. Sarkar does whatever he does for the people and not for personal gain and profit. And that makes it primarily a family drama and not a mafia story.”

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

going to go see sarkar tonight at SQ! sauga :)

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

Ram Gopal Varma movies are superb....
he never cheat/copies of any english film....
SARKAR is doing a very good bussiness in India
and after a very long time (i think after KHAKEE)
Amitab has done great job...

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

People have connected with Varma’s thundering thesis on the father-son relationship the way parents connected with Ravi Chopra’s “Baghban” - the treatise on parenting - two years ago.

“Sarkar”, which opened with 375 prints across the country, is likely to become the fourth mega-hit of 2005 (after “Black”, “Waqt: A Race Against Time” and “Bunty Aur Babli”) and the first bona fide hit of the second-half of the year.

Sarkar -- Bachans combined for a masterpiece of early 80s

Big B is definitely amongst the superstars of Bollywood that one can count on fingers of one hand, perhaps the biggest Bollywood star for most fans, but at least at this stage of his life he must accept selective roles for him. It is easy to find him in ads of Pan masala, choclates,... and in average movies like Sarkar.

Sarkar may have been a masterpiece if it was targetted in early 80s, but is not comparative to other flicks with similar story-lines of the time, like Company, Satya, Vastav,....

Re: Sarkar – Bachans combined for a masterpiece of early 80s

It is rumored that this film is based on the life of Bal Thackeray…

Why Sarkar is Sena supremo
By: Deepak Lokhande
June 26, 2005

Like countless directors all over the world, some of whom may admit to the fact and some who may not – I have been deeply influenced by Francis Ford Coppola’s unforgettable movie ‘The Godfather’, both in technical style and story content. Yes, ‘Sarkar’ has been inspired by the classic film, which offers something new on every repeated viewing.

Our take: Okay, so…

Yet at the same time, I would clarify firmly that ‘Sarkar’ is not an imitation or a clone. It’s story and screenplay have been located in an Indian milieu, and particularly so in the context of Mumbai’s power superstructure.

Our take: You are getting closer, baby…

Contrary to media speculation, the title character is not an underworld don. Rather he is a man who has rewritten the law. He has risen with time and circumstance to wield unchecked and autocratic authority over the people living in a so-called democratic form of governance.

Our take: Rewritten the law? Wields unchecked and autocratic authority? Why, this is Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray!

When he calls a bandh, it is total. Twenty years ago, Maharashtra’s Congress leaders ended their speech with Jai Hind. Today, almost all party leaders end it with Jai Maharashtra, a Thackeray coinage. He hasn’t allowed any other leader to grow under him. Ask Manohar Joshi and Narayan Rane.

By nature, he possesses the ability, the charisma, the intelligence and the Machiavellian cunning to control the working of the city, in all its various aspects. He even dispenses justice when the common man cannot obtain it from the law keepers — the government, the police and the judiciary.

Our take: Need we say more? Sena has shakhas where ‘justice’ is dispensed to those who complain there. When Manisha Koirala wanted to ban Ek Chhotisi Love Story, she went to Thackeray. When Mala Sinha did not want her daughter Pratibha to marry music director Nadeem, she went to Balasaheb.

When Sanjay Dutt was arrested under TADA, his father Congress leader Sunil Dutt approached Thackeray for help. And then who could forget that perfect example of remote control?

Enron’s Rebecca Mark was delayed for her meeting with the then CM and Sena leader Manohar Joshi because she was in a meeting with Thackeray. Enron not only got its first phase of its controversial power project going, but the Sena-BJP government also granted permission for the second phase.

Thackeray’s charisma is beyond description. He could be the only leader, after Swami Vivekanand, who gets cheers for his opening speech-line — Jamalelya majhya tamaam Hindu bandhavano aani bhaginino (My Hindu brothers and sisters…).

‘Sarkar’ is a volatile film dealing with crime, greed, love, family relationships and retribution.

Our take: This is the persona of Thackeray in a scenario minus politics.

While acknowledging my lifelong debt to Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’, this is my extremely personal and original take on the Mario Puzo novel, which continues to have a universal resonance.

Finally, I would state that ‘Satya’ and ‘Company’ were just preparatory blue prints for the film ‘Sarkar’. With this film, I hope that my trilogy on crime and punishment; within the reality of our country, our city and our neighborhood; has come a full circle.

Our conclusion: If the movie wasn’t on Bal Thackeray, why did he want to see it at all

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

I saw the movie Sarkar and it was boring.

Acting was great by both B's and the girl who had a crush on Abhishek's character.

It is a one-dimensional slow motion drama. The story is like half hour long but they strecth it out with close up and extreme close ups over and over again so many times that it looses its cool.

I would say just watch it once if you want to.

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

I saw it loved it .... and for the first time in a amitabh movie i liked other actor more than amitabh ...n that was abhishek. Its a movie basically for ppl who love (not like ) RGV movies.

I never thought abhishek can be this good ..... he will remind you of amitabh in 60/70 movies .....

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

What a lame ass movie. It never developed...and it's too damn slow that you can have good 2 hour nap.

The Bachchan combo was great in Bunty Aur Bubli.

Sharmila Tagore back after a long time in Bollywood

Sharmila Tagore is back after a long time in “Viruddh”. Both Amitabh and Sharmila say it is one of the best film of their movie career.

Also stars Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham, Sachin Khedekar , Anusha Ranade

http://www.bollywoodsargam.com/modules.php?set_albumName=Viruddh_Movie&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

Viruddh will showcase veteran Amitabh Bachchan and classic actress Sharmila Tagore after a long time. The last time they shared on screen space was in Chupke Chupke with Dharmendra, Om Prakash and Jaya Bachchan among the other starcast.

Viruddh is a bilingual film that addresses various issues of a common man’s plight against the system. There were speculation that the film is a remake of the Mahesh Bhatt-directed Saaransh with Anupam Kher and Rohini Hattangadi playing the elderly couple who lose their young son in a fatal accident. However, Mahesh Manjrekar, the director has strongly denied the accusation. Now it remains to be seen how much Viruddh resembles Saaransh…

Viruddh is the story of a person (John Abraham) who accidentally witnesses a criminal act and loses his life in his attempt to intervene.

Viruddh is the story of standing up against a well-established paradigm of power in defense of his/her convictions. It is about dissent, refusal of fear and of extraordinary courage and tenacity amidst extreme pressure and adversity.

Viruddh is also about an ordinary sixty plus couple, Vidyadhar Patwardhan (Amitabh Bachchan) and Sumitra (Sharmila Tagore), who are forced to search for their faith in human values and society after the death of their only son. In this process they undergo the most testing struggle of their lives.

The ingredients of Viruddh and its theme are universally identifiable. Set in the networked and global milieu, it tells a tale that has classical elements and structure and can be relocated in almost any context.

The film expresses individual and social vulnerability in the face of a corrupt system and how this equation continues to be the same even as the ways of the society change.

The film is scheduled to release on July 22nd.

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

She is Kajol’s sis

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

I saw the movie yesterday night. Sarkar is actually a mix of two to three concepts. The major story line comes from a 12 year old Telugu (south Indian) movie titled “Gayam” - starring Jagapathi babu. That film was directed by Ram Gopal verma (or AM Rathnam?) and those were the days when he was still restricted to Telugu movie field - before shifting into bollywood. The only addition I see in this movie Sarkar is the role of amitabh (In original telugu - there is no father for the two brothers).

Anyhow the movie is OK and I find amitabh’s action was superb. Abhishek has really done a good job and thankfully there are no songs.

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

movie is not about brothers … its about father. I think yo have missed starting credits … where ramgopal varma says … he is inspired by godfather. And also you dont have any knowledge about real SARKAR …

Re: Sharmila Tagore back after a long time in Bollywood

Whats the use of opening numerous threads on same topic?

Re: Sharmila Tagore back after a long time in Bollywood

… do u mean bollywood movies ..

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

Really? What’s her name?

Rani is also related to Kajol and Kajol is a fine actress herself. Runs in the family…

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

i guess tanisha

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

Yes. I agree that this movie might have resemblance to Godfather, but this is a story based on the actual incident happening in Vijayawada, the native city on coastal andhra Pradesh of Ram gopal verma. During the late 1980’s there was a big don named “Mohan Ranga” who was killed by his enemies. That inspired Verma to come out with Gayam, where the role of abhishek is played by Jagapathi Babu.

Obviously, if Ram Gopal Verma tells that he is inspired or picked from Mohan Ranga’s life - people will not even care about this movie, if he quotes ‘God Father’, then obviously everyone will sit up and watch.

Ofcourse, I agree that bringing Amitabh into the movie has made him the central character and spun the story around this main pillar. Sarkar is not a scene to scene remake of Gayam, but has picked up many scenes from Gayam. The role of Katrina is played by Revathi - a famous Tamil actress, the role of Kajol’s sis is played by Urmila Matondkar. The negative roles of Kota Srinivasarao (Selva Mani- Tamil Don) and Swamiji are played by the same actors in the telugu version also.

Re: Viruddh/Sarkar

I dont agree with you on this point … RGV over the years has won a lot of loyals … who love his kind of cinema. He dont have to miss guide these ppl, cos he know they will be there in theaters to watch his movie without knowing story line.

I suggest you to read GODFATHER or watch the movie with same name.
