Virtues of Reciting Surah Kahf on Friday

Assalamo alaykum,

Following is more or less solely based on ahadith. Feel free to follow or disregard it.

Praise be to Allaah.

The Virtues

There are saheeh ahaadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) concerning the virtues of reciting Soorat al-Kahf during the day or night of Jumu’ah (Friday). These include:

(a) From Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri, who said: “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the night of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ancient House (the Ka’bah).”

(Narrated by al-Daarimi, 3407. This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami, 6471)

(b) “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will shine from him from one Friday to the next.”

(Narrated by al-Haakim, 2/399; al-Bayhaqi, 3/249. Ibn Hajar said in Takhreej al-Adhkaar that this is a hasan hadeeth, and he said, this is the strongest report that has been narrated concerning reading Soorat al-Kahf. See: Fayd al-Qadeer, 6/198. It was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 6470)

(c) It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, a light will shine for him from beneath his feet to the clouds of the sky, which will shine for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be forgiven (his sins) between the two Fridays.’”

Al-Mundhiri said, this was narrated by Abu Bakr ibn Mardawayh in his Tafseer, with an isnaad with which there was nothing wrong.

(al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb, 1/298)

When to recite it

The soorah may be read during the night or the day of Jumu’ah. The night of Jumu’ah starts from sunset on Thursday, and the day of Jumu’ah ends at sunset. Therefore the time for reading this soorah extends from sunset on Thursday to sunset on Friday.

Al-Mannaawi said:

Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said in his Amaali: “In some reports it says ‘the day of Jumu’ah’ and in some reports it says ‘the night of Jumu’ah’. They may be reconciled by saying that what is meant is the day which includes the night and vice versa.” (Fayd al-Qadeer, 6/199)

Al-Mannaawi also said:

“It is recommended to read it during the day or night of Jumu’ah, as al-Shaafa’i (may Allaah have mercy on him) stated.” (Fayd al-Qadeer, 6/198)

:jazak:
Indeed a powerful Surah. One of my favorites

Re: Virtues of Reciting Surah Kahf on Friday

Is it true that if you know the first 7 or 10 (forgot which number) lines of this surah, you will be saved or something if Dajjal comes? Or is that another nonsence?

Re: Virtues of Reciting Surah Kahf on Friday

Actually, apart from virtues the sura is very interesting and amusing itself.

If you start reading the translation, you wont like to leave in the middle it is so absorbing.

The story of time travel i.e Ashab-e-kahaf

The story of Hazrat Musa :as: and Hazrat Khizar :as: is very interesting

The story of Zolqarnain.

All of them are fascinating :k:

Re: Virtues of Reciting Surah Kahf on Friday

Apart from the fascinating bit, every story is a source of guidance one way or another.

Re: Virtues of Reciting Surah Kahf on Friday

It’s the first 10 verses. It’s been mentioned in a number of ahadeeth.

Sahih Muslim:
" … He who amongst you would survive to see him should recite over him the opening verses of Sura Kahf."

(Allah knows best)

Re: Virtues of Reciting Surah Kahf on Friday

The Hunk, thanks for adding that bit. :k: I believe there are a few other ahadith on it clearly telling us to memorize the first 10 and/or the last 10 verses of Surah Kahf and Allahu aalim.

Re: Virtues of Reciting Surah Kahf on Friday

I always thought it was the entire surah. Not just first or last few ayas.

And best to recite before isha prayers ?

Re: Virtues of Reciting Surah Kahf on Friday

MQ, you have to recite the entire Surah on Fridays, as indicated in the initial post. Whereas, fisrt and/or last 10 verses of Surah Kahf are to be memorised in case one lives long enough to encounter Dajjal. It's something along those lines and Allahu aalim.

Re: Virtues of Reciting Surah Kahf on Friday

there are two hadith in Sahih Muslim that mention ten verses from Surah al Kahf:

"Whoever memorises (hafiza) the first ten verses of Surah al Kahf will be protected from the trials of the Dajjal" (1:1766)

"Whoever reads (qara'a) the last ten verses of Surah al Kahf will be protected from the trials of the Dajjal" (1:1767)

it may be possible to reconcile these two reports by pointing out that the first stresses "memorisation" and the second encourages "reading"... so one has a choice between the two according to ability...

however, the hadith posted earlier by TH also speaks of "reading" the "opening" verses and another report in Sunan Abu Dawud (3:4309) speaks of "memorising" the "final" verses, in each case without specifying a particular number...

so one may have a complete choice: either to memorise or read the opening verses or specifically the opening ten verses or to memorise or read the final verses or specifically the final ten verses...

according to Muhaddith al Albani's analysis the "first ten verses" report is the more authentic, having been reported by the greater number of narrators (cf. Silsila al Sahiha, 582, and Sahih Sunan Abu Dawud, 3634)

another understanding is that by mentioning the first and last ten verses what is in fact meant is the Surah in its entirety... this is a common device in the Arabic language: to mention the first and last aspects of something but actually intend all of it... for example it speaks in the Qur'an in many places about those who "believe in Allah and in the Last Day" (e.g. 4:162) yet all the other articles of faith that fall in between, such as belief in the messengers, books etc., are intended also
