Maybe its that I've led a somewhat sheltered life but I just cant get used to the idea of husband and wife living apart. If hub needs to be away for long periods of time, wife should be with him - kids or no kids. Troubles or no troubles to get it done. If it is a one-time or very occasional thing that they need to be parted then I'm sure its fine Islaamically and otherwise to do husband-and-wife things however they can be done.
