May be best answer is to allow people with conceled weapons license to bring their guns on campus... its sad but it looks like more guns on campus is the answer. if one of those victims or bystanders had a weapon then they could have taken that maniac down and could have saved some lifes. in louisiana you can bring guns on campus... a tragedy like that is hard to happen here...
The chief of Virginia Assc of Citizens or something made this point on newsnight with Gavin Estler. Its a fine line. From a European perspective, a total ban on private arms would work, esp if one argues that the 2nd ammendment was written and applicable only for that time, ie in the prevailing climate of revolution and fear of foreign intervention to end the experiment of a nation concieved in liberty to paraphrase Lincoln.

Keith Olbermann reporting that the shooter was a Chinese international student who arrived in the country last August.
Now, unlike Muslims, Chinese can be spotted from miles and they look the same! I see lot of hate crimes against Chinese and other people of south east asian ancestory.

I'm not an American, I am fond of the founding ideals of that nation and class myself as a Jeffersonian Liberal, but if I was an American I'd be peeved at the audacity of that rice picker!

I have many friends that go to Virginia Tech.. Insha'Allah I hope they are all fine and safe. This is crazy! You can't even go to class without the fear of not coming back alive.
so do i....i've contacted many of them and/or their parents and Alhamdulillah they are ok....but im really worried about the few others i have gotten in touch with yet.

yes..i agree..they see Asians as Chinese..and Pakistanis as Arabs..or Indians..so i'm pretty sure it was some Chinese..however...there is a high population of Pakistan's in Virginia..so cant be sure..

The US census considers Pakistani to be an "Asian American heritage".
That's the legal classification, its a case of so few Pakistanis that public perception sees "Asian" as meaning the majority "Asian" populace there-ie what we'd call Oriental.
For my understanding, at 5am, what in public perception are US-Pakistanis regarded as, middle easteners or what?

If you took a survey and asked people to classify a Pakistani the most popular choice would likely be Arab, sorry. Arabs = Muslims in a lot of peoples minds and Pakistan is an Islamic country hence the mistaken generalization for the people being Arab. That said bigger cities and people who are more well read would likely classify Pakistanis and Pakistanis as the Asian label is saved for Chinese, Korean, Japanese, ect...what you call oriental which I think is seen as a derogatory or improper term in the states these days but would also know better than Asian could very well mean Pakistan.
Story floating is that this guy was of Chinese back round here on a student visa. not confirmed.
