Just goes to show that no single culture and no single religion has monopoly over faithfuls looking for miracles in the form of shapes in unusual places.
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) – A steady stream of the faithful and the curious, many carrying flowers and candles, have flocked to an expressway underpass for a view of a yellow and white stain on a concrete wall that some believe is an image of the Virgin Mary. “We believe it’s a miracle,” said Elbia Tello, 42. “We have faith, and we can see her face.” Tuesday morning, women knelt with rosary beads behind a police barricade while men in work shirts stood solemnly before the image, praying.
Worldwide, people have been drawn to images believed to resemble the Virgin Mary seen on windows, fence posts and walls. Among the best-known in the United States was an image seen in office windows in Clearwater, Florida. Within weeks, a half million people had been to the site. Glass experts believe the image was created by a chemical reaction and corrosion of the metallic elements in the glass coating, but they could not explain why it took the shape it did. The windows were broken last year.
sigh - yeah, why do they do this? do people actually scrutinize every surface for these images and proclaim the sides of a stupid bridge holy? I'm lucky I see the crack in the sidewalk I almost trip over.
Because it’s their faith…No matter how idiotic or humorous one may believe someone’s faith to be, Muslims are told not to disrespect it (Unless the said faith changed or tried to distort Islamic dictates, then Muslims are supposed to fight with all their might. Dictates are simple to carry out. Just two of them. The Quran and the Sunnah, got a beef with Sunnah, consult the Quran, but no tolerance for Islam distorters).
…Simply ignore it…If it’s Virgin Mary to them, so let it be…They to their way and we to ours…Happy happy joy joy…
sure, if that would mean you’d agree to add a post script to your condescending speech on tolerance of faiths stating that you dont practice what you preach a whole lot. let me know.
If I didn’t practice it, it was my shortcoming, not Islam’s…I may be a Muslim, but don’t expect me to be perfect…We try you know…I hope you forgive a Muslim’s indiscretion once in a while for becoming angry at something…We are humans too buddy…We all make mistakes…
If by any chance I did offend anybody, I apologise…I am imperfection incarnate…
UTD because that is a real problem not imagined problems that many ppl keep running after around here. Chicago just got ranked behind NYC as the worst in terms of commute time, plus we dont have the extensive public transport system like NYC does so there is no escpaing it. Now forget freeways, local roads are a mess nationwide because something as simple as looking at traffic patterns , matching traffic signal programming and synchronisation of signals has not been done.
believe me it if was ppl flocking to see the image of virgin mary in an underpass in ponca city oklahoma, or to pay respects to some leaf where the veins seemed to spell out The Force in lake walla walla, I would not have bothered with any comments.
flying cars may come soon, but then so will the idiots who seem to get their drivers licenses out of cornflakes boxes. I shudder to think of the typical AARP member drivers that seem to drive out in flocks
oh and the virgin mary image on a piece of toast that was sold for some hundreds of dollars on ebay. :halo:
Apparitions of popular religious figures are everywhere! It’s not just Virgin mary people often tell tales of. I have heard about others being witnessed. I take them as signs from God or why would they be there? What’s the purpose of a mere figure carved in by dripping water? It may be a coincidence, but I believe everything happens for a reason.
Lajawab - hon, I’m Catholic, I never understood these people, to me that is right up there with idolatry (geesh, spelling this early in the morning, not good). Praying to the concrete side of a bridge
It is not because of their faith, it is religious hysteria
people see it as a "sign" that what they believe in is true, it gives them hope and gives them conviction to increase their faith.
We live in strange old world where we as humans have been the safest and healthiest we have ever been but still very empty emotionally.
when you can mentally translate a splodge on a wall into a divine figure and "feel" the love and warmth it provides you, why not!
