viewing the body after death

i’ve heard two sided arguments on this. havent had the time to research it myself yet. what do you guys know about it - after the death of a person, he is not mehram of his wife anymore, therefore she can not wash his body or look at his body?

Re: viewing the body after death

She Can
He Can not

Re: viewing the body after death

i'm confused. the wife can wash the body..but the husband can't?

Re: viewing the body after death

Allow ignorance(me) to intervene on holy grounds. I believe the body is to be washed as per sunnah, and as the person is dead, everyone is namehram :D Therefore, in this situation, I believe the spouse or next of kin is the best candidate for the job of washing, as they enjoyed certain intimacy while the dead was alive.

Re: viewing the body after death

As far as I know that once the husband dies, a wife is still under nikkah till the end of her “iddat” period and hence, the husband remains mehram for her for that time. Therefore, it is allowed for her to see and wash his body. On the contrary, that is not the case with husband when his wife dies.

This is the common understanding in Ahnaaf unless otherwise, other school of thought disagrees and has a better daleel for that matter.

Hope, my earlier response is clear now. May Allah:swt: give us knowledge and guide us of what we do not know. Aameen.

husband can wash deadbody of his wife,

Re: viewing the body after death

  1. People who are (preferably) entitled to wash the deceased man and pray for him and bury him are his male guardians .e.g. father, the closest Kin and so forth. Similarly female guardians are more entitled to wash a deceased female i.e. the mother, grand mother, closest female relatives etc.,

The husband or wife can wash the deceased spouse, because the dead body of Abu Bakr, was washed by his wife and Ali, washed the body of his wife Fatima, May Allah be pleased with her.
