Holland to host three-way shootout

The overloaded one-day calendar just became even fuller, with news that three of the game’s key superpowers – Australia, India and Pakistan – will stop off in the Netherlands on their way to this year’s Champions Trophy in England.

Each side will play each other once with the top two sides going through to a final. The tournament will reportedly run from August 22-29, coinciding with the Athens Olympics.

In 25 years of tri-nation one-day tournaments it will be only the second time these three countries have faced off in a triangular tournament. In their previous three-way encounter, the Carlton & United Series of 1999-2000, Australia won nine straight matches.

It will be the first multi-nation series to take place in the Netherlands, who staged one World Cup game in 1999.

A Cricket Australia spokesman could not confirm the dates but said the Australians are scheduled to arrive in Holland on August 20. The 12-nation Champions Trophy begins on September 10.

The Australians have already played 17 one-day internationals this year, more than India (15) and Pakistan (10). The new, as yet unnamed, tournament means they are so far scheduled to play a possible 28 ODIs in 2004 – down from 35 last year and their 1999 peak of 37. But it’s only May.

Rivals Pakistan, India to play opener in Dutch tri-series](http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/040609/3/4ald.html)

KARACHI (AFP) - Pakistan and India will open a one-day tri-series which will bring big-time cricket to the Netherlands on August 21, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced here.

World champions Australia will also play in the series.

“The final Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to be signed shortly and involved boards of Pakistan, India and Australia besides the involvement of the Netherlands board,” PCB general manager cricket operations Zakir Khan told AFP on Wednesday.

The Netherlands’ Amstelveen stadium hosted one match in the 1999 World Cup held in England.

“It will be a great boost for cricket in the Netherlands which has taken significant strides at international level,” said Khan, a former pace bowler for Pakistan.

Australia will take on India on August 23 and two days later square off with Pakistan. The final will be played on August 28.

Until March last year, Pakistan and India had played only one one-day match in three years. India broke the deadlock over political tension between the two countries by touring Pakistan earlier this year after a gap of 15 years.

India won an exciting five-match one-day series 3-2 and grabbed the three-match Test series 2-1, their first ever wins in both forms of the game in Pakistan.

The traditional rivals are also due to lock horns in the six-nation Asia Cup in Sri Lanka next month and will play before an already sell out crowd at Edgbaston, England when they meet in the 12-nation ICC (International Cricket Council) Champions Trophy on September 19 this year.

Pakistan is due to tour India to play three Tests and five one-day matches early next year.

I am guessing they will have a pretty good attendance due to expatriat crowds. But are the dutch really interested in this series.

News are that Ten Sports, DD-India and ESPN+Star Sports are bidding for the rights for this 4-Games triangluar.

If the rights are secured by:
Ten Sports then coverage in EU: ARY-Digital; Mid-East: ARY-Digital; Asia: Ten Sports

DD-India then coverage in EU: BSkyB; Mid-East: Fox Sports ME; Asia: DD-India & PTV

ESPN + Star Sports then coverage in EU: Sky; Mid-East: Fox Sports ME; Asia: ESPN + Star Sports

I hope ESPN + Star Sports secure the rights since they've a more professional coverage than ARY-Digital

Lee returns to Australian squad for ICC Champions Trophy](http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/040802/3/5dsv.html)

The express fast bowler was chosen in a 14-man Australian squad for one-day tournaments in the Netherlands and England starting later this month.

Lee was declared fit by Cricket Australia medical staff following ankle surgery after an early return from the tour to Sri Lanka last March.

Lee faces stiff competition for a start in Australia’s fast bowling line-up for the two tournaments.

He was named along with Jason Gillespie, Glenn McGrath and Michael Kasprowicz.

Lee was injured on the tour of Sri Lanka in March after going for 2-129 off 23 overs in three one-day matches.

He had surgery that month and has since undergone more than four months of rehabilitation, including strengthening and technical work with Australian fast bowling great Dennis Lillee.

“I have been working really hard,” Lee said on Monday. "After the initial disappointment of that injury, I focused all my energies into getting back.

"The whole break has given me a chance to reflect on the past five years and assess where my career is at.

“The ankle feels fine, my body feels fresh and I just can’t wait to pull on an Australian uniform again.”

Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said he was confident Lee was back to full fitness.

“We have … seen Brett go through his paces in Brisbane recently,” Hohns said.

“He is a quality bowler who will give the pace attack some real depth and variety.”

At 27, Lee does have age on his side. Gillespie is 29, Kasprowicz 32 and McGrath 34.

In the past year Gillespie has assumed the role of Australia’s strike bowler, but McGrath showed he was getting back to his best after his ankle problems in the recent Top End series against Sri Lanka.

Kasprowicz is enjoying an Indian summer in his career and has the advantage of strong recent performances.

The Australians will use a triangular tournament against India and Pakistan in Amsterdam on August 21-28 as a tune-up for the ICC Champions Trophy in England starting in mid-September.

Adam Gilchrist will miss the Netherlands leg because of the impending birth of his second child. New South Wales keeper Brad Haddin will fill in for him and Darren Lehmann will assume the vice-captaincy.

Australia: Ricky Ponting (captain), Adam Gilchrist (vice captain), Michael Clarke, Jason Gillespie, Ian Harvey, Matthew Hayden, Brad Hogg, Michael Kasprowicz, Brett Lee, Darren Lehmann, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson (Brad Haddin to stand in for Gilchrist in the Netherlands’ tournament).

that's all? It will end before we know it started. Can hardly wait though.

oh boy another severe beating come our way....

i don't think pak will win the videocon trophy simply cos' the world champs' r too good for our current side and against india pak always have a 50/50 chance, having said that; india i believe with a stronger batting line up can give the aussies a better game then we can @ the mo'.

our bowlers need a decent total to bowl and being a unpredictable side, pak will never feel confident going into any match, it's a dif' story that inzi and the boys put up a brave face infront of the mass media when knowing deep down the asliyat. oh well pak will just have to prove me wrong then won't they?
