Re: Video: Assassination of Zia-ul-Haq

Summary before we view?

^ It is a BBC Programme.

Zia-ul-Haq (1924-1988) born in Jalandhar (Indian Punjab)

The programme looks at Zia's steady rise to the top job. Zia was commissioned into a cavalry regiment of the Indian army in 1943 and fought in Burma during the successful campaign to defeat the Japanese. was recognised as an able but not brilliant officer. At the time of partition in 1947 Zia joined PA as a Major.
On April 1 1976, PM Zulfikar Ali Bhutto commits political suicide by appointing Zia COAS over the heads of several more senior generals thinking he was a non-political figure. Just over a year later Zia commits high treason on July 5 1977 overthrowing ZAB and declaring Martial Law. April 4 1979 at dawn ZAB is hanged.

mentions all possible suspects

  • Gorbachev (in revenge for Zia's arming of the Mujahideen)
  • Rajiv Gandhi (held Zia responsible for arming Sikh separatists),
  • disgruntled generals in PA (Zia had been planning to make changes amongst the army high command)
  • Mir Murtaza Bhutto (for obvious reasons)

  • Khomeini (was becoming increasingly suspicious of the growing power of Sunni Pakistan under Zia) &

  • Gulbadeen Hikmatyar (had fallen out seriously with Zia)

  • Israels' secret service Mossad (paranoid about Pakistan's 'muslim' bomb)

  • CIA (Zia's possible arming of Taliban extremists) - just a passing mention

touches upon events of Aug 17 1988 when Zia went to a testing ground near Bahawalpur to watch the demonstration of the new American battle tank 'M1 Abrahams'. The demonstration is a disaster. In a firing test the tank misses it's target 10 times out of 10 then breaks down. :)

looks at the final few moments of the Hercules C130 flight code-named 'Pack 1'. Zia and VCOAS Aslam Beg were both initially reluctant to go to Bahawalpur.
