Victims of caste system in Punjab

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

There is a factual error in the book. Meluhha is claimed to mean land of darkskinned people. Established academic theories claim Meluhha corresponds to Dravidian “mel akam” meaning high country. There are also claims that Meluhha is the origin of the Sanskrit word Mleccha which means foreigner or barbarian. I am sure that IVC people would not call themselves barbarians or foreigners in which case they are not the fabled Meluhhans.

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

Calysodyc, I wished to point out that Mahabharat was probably written in the period when casteism was becoming hereditary but not has not become completely stringent.

One more thing, why pakistani christians have arabic name instead of Christian ones??

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

Parvez Masseh? any particular examples of Arabic names in Pakistani Christians.

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

Shahbaz Bhatti :), and I read in some report and it mentioned arabic names instead of christian ones :)

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

Both Pervez and Shahbaz are Persian names

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

I should have written muslim name, do you think I can make difference between Persian and Arabic :D

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

:cb: They have names like Tara, Shahbaz, Pervez, Joseph, David… When we used to live in Azam Town, we have many christian neighbors. Our cable wala was also a christian. His name was Pappu ( famous as Pappu cable wala). He resembled Ishrat ul Ibad, so I used to refer to him as Governor Sindh :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

Pappu is universal name here I believe, In India, Pappu can be hindu, muslim or christian name. same is with the name Sonu :)

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

Pappu, Guddu,Raja, Rani, GuRiya.. all are acceptable in all religions

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

Caste system of Punjab according to Baba Bulley Shah...

Chal Bulleya Chal Uthay Chalyae Jithay Saray Anay
Na Koi Saadi Zaat Pachane
Na Koi Sanu Manne

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

and Bulleh Shah paid price for saying all this.

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

I don't know the reason but many Christians do have Muslim sounding names, maybe to avoid discrimination or that they don't find it important. I have seen some people Christian names as well like Daniel.

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

Daniel or Danyaal?

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

They have hindu sounding name as well in India, may be they converted to christianity and held their cultural name of previous religion :)

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

Daniel, John and Michael etc. Many names in Islam and Christianity are similar like muqqawwee pointed out, maybe this is one reason of them choosing the common names of the land.

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

What is the reason for caste system being so entrenched in Punjab as opposed to the other regions? One would think that after all the invasions and settlements that went on in the region, they would be a more open and relaxed society. What I mean is there should not be any cultural stagnation,

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

Interesting question. :hmmm:

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

In other areas (like kpk and balochistan) the tribes live in their own specific areas (wazirs, afridis, khattaks, bugtis and marris). In Punjab (and Sindh) there are mix populations. In the same town you will find jatts, Rajputs, arains, syeds, sheikhs etc. maybe that's why the people tried to keep their tribal identity alive. Even now the family (identity) is the most important.

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

This reminds me...

rahiye ab esi jaga chal kar jahan koi na ho
hum-sukhan koi na ho, aur hum-zubaan koi na ho
-Ghalib

Did Ghalib use idea of this shayr from Bulley Shah?! It is hard to believe that Ghalib would know Punjabi.

Re: Victims of caste system in Punjab

I think in that sense, Urdu speaking people are unique in Pakistan. Because most of them have absolutely no family identity. Many use only two names, the second name being the name of father, with no third or family name.
Reason could be that many Urdu speaking people were Muslims who came to live in India from outside, and then mixed with local population. They did not have time to develop family identity.
