I am often dissing Indian players, but once in a while a player comes along who rekindles hope in me for the future of Indian Cricket.
Piyush Chawla is one of them. He appears to have great variety in his bowling. Has age in his favor (he is just 18)…and very importantly for me, he is also a good bat.
The ball he bowled Ashraful with yesterday…was a ripper of a Googly.
That said, it remains to be seen how he is handled by the powers-that-be. Too often, a player starts out showing great promise…plays a few good series…then has 3-4 bad games or gets injured …gets dropped and is never heard of again…
And then there are players like Kaif and Pathan who are simply mishandled…Kaif became typecast as a lower-down ODI batsman (most often coming in situations where he needed to hit or get out and thereby never got opportunities to show his true potential on a consistent basis)…and Pathan…well, he is getting more punishment than necessary…where players like Sehwag/Agarkar keep getting chances after umpteen failures.
Anyways, back to the topic at hand ---- Piyush needs to be nurtured carefully.
Another average player being built up already. Maybe the whole of india should stick to marketing ; the way u guys promote ur average players always amuses the cricketing world, especially after they get their butt kicked when they play the top teams.
yeah he has definitely impressed
we didnt really every get to see other spin options available in India because of the likes of harbhajan and kumble, but piyush has done well for himself with the opportunity given
not only Piyush, but any youngster needs to be nurtured carefully
i believe sreesanth is another key to indian cricket, i hope they dont pull a pathan on him too
Believe me, I know HYPE when I see it. When Sehwag was pounding centuries after centuries, I was the only one here saying that it was only a matter of time before his bluff was called. Before the World Cup, I said the same thing about Uthappa. And even after Gambhir's century yesterday, I will still say that he hasn't got the stuff to succeed against better bowling sides and on lively pitches.
That said, Piyush hasn't even got that much coverage as some of the other players who have made debuts in recent times.
It is not his 3 wickets against BD which led me to start this thread. I, with all due modesty, have a good record of telling when I see a real deal. Piyush appears to be one. But his career can very easily fall by the wayside, if he is not handled carefully (esp in terms of selection).
The ball he bowled Ashraful with yesterday...was a ripper of a Googly.
Very decent ball, yes. His run-up is similar to Warne's. I will be skeptical on his performance until after a few series in which he is likely to perform, and hope he does it consistently. Unless he gets some exposure under his belt, the impression is not worth the weight.
Thank you soooo much for this. It motivated me to search the “Ghazab ka hai din” song I mentioned earlier, though I never would’ve thought it would be tagged “gajab ka hai din”…
