ISLAMABAD - Senator Talha Mehmood said that new cell phones’ SIMs would be issued after a detailed verification from Nadra, in order to eradicate the issuance of bogus SIMs.
He was addressing a press conference at his office here on Thursday.
The PPP Senator, who is also Chairman of Standing Committee of Senate on Interior, said that he had a meeting with the Chief Executive Officers (CEO’s) of all the mobile companies to discuss several issues. “I had a successful meeting with the top representatives of U-fone, Warid, Mobilink, Zong and Telenor”, he stated
While elaborating details of the meeting, Talha Mehmood said that all the CEO’s had pledged to assure their full co-operation to eradicate unauthorized cellular SIMs.
“It’s very encouraging that mobile companies are investing a lot in our country and are providing jobs to our people, but they have to operate within the law of our land and they have pledged to do so”, he noted.
The Senator further revealed that a deadline was given to all the mobile companies to block the unregistered SIM cards. Initially the deadline was decided to be May 21.
Later it was extended to June 30. " The CEO’s have told me that they are trying their level best to block all the fake SIMs, and have given the detailed record of their performance", he observed.
We have a verification system for Post-Paid SIMs only, like other parts of the world. However, because of extraordinary situation we are in at the moment, government is introducing verification system for Pre-Paid SIMs as well.
So if I go to Pak for a holiday for one week, I will not be able to use a local sim?!!! Surely the detailed verification will take a few days at least?!
Man we are going backwards in the speedy communications!!
