Veggies...

Who here uses frozen veggies? I think they’re pretty good..but they come out kinda soggy and soft sometimes. Any tips on how to make em kinda crunchy/crispy?

Re: Veggies...

I only use frozen peas for mattar pilau and occasionally frozen spinach with fresh spinach in saag dishes...

I know some ppl use alot of frozen veg in their curries but i prefer fresh as it's got more of a natural crunch to it.

However, you can try frying the frozen veg in very less oil and then adding to curry it may help achieve more of a crunch...but it wuld depend on the type of dish you are making,,

Re: Veggies...

Frozen veg can be fresher than non frozen veg as it's frozen within very quickly once ready whereas the 'fresh' veg has often been sitting in various warehouses and supermarkets for days and is treated to keep it looking fresh for longer.

Re: Veggies...

I eat em alone, i dont' use them in dishes or anything... Normally I boil them in water and then drain em and eat em..but it comes out soggy.

Re: Veggies...

I use peas for matar pulaao. Mixed veggies for the chinese fried rice type dishes. Spinach for meat dishes. I prefer them over canned veggies. Of course if you want to eat them by themselves then I would recommend fresh is the way to go.

Re: Veggies...

you should just wash them and then heat them up in a pan instead of boiling them. also add a teaspoon of olive oil to make them a little crispy. i usually eat them with rice this way.

Re: Veggies...

^ Hey sobias, thanks, i'll try that!

Re: Veggies...

no problem and tell me if this way worked better. i can't eat the veggies alone so i put less rice and more of the veggies so i could be full and not feel guilty of eating a lot of rice.

Hi Sara

Steaming is another great way of eating veggies and with steaming you dont lose many of the important nutrients whereas with boiling you do , just a humble opinion :)

Re: Veggies…

^ Hain? boiling loses nutrients? :konfused:

ok how do u "steam’ htem? :konfused:

Re: Veggies...

Yes ! boiling loses major nutrients , just google " veggies boiling nutrients" and you should get a huge return with lots of articles on the subject :)

Steaming is pretty easy , you can actually go out and buy a proper steamer or you can get a steel steaming basket which will fit inside a steel pot and should have a tight fitting lid.In your pan add water , about 2 cups and bring to a boil , keep your veggies ready in your steaming basket(layer the vegetables in such a way that the ones which take longer to cook stay at the bottom followed by those that are quick to cook ( for eg carrots at the botom as they are harder , then broccoli and then peas-) and lower the basket once the water is boiling , cover and lower the heat to medium , it usually takes anywhere between 5-20 mins for steaming veggies depending on what combination you have prepared , the best way to tell is by checking them around the 8-10 minute mark , you can insert a knife to check , perfectly steamed veggies will reain their color and crunch , oversteaming will cause them to become soggy and discolored.Serve them up with a dressing of olive oil and mixed herbs oor just as they are.
Alternatively , you can also microwave steamed veggies but honestly I prefer the oldfashioned way. Goods luck :)

Re: Veggies…

^ That’s too complicated :hehe: Hey nutrients or not, at least veggies are better than chips.. :bummer:
