Vat to do...

When they call you about a job you applied for 6 months ago? And you threw away the advert and do not recall the exact job description? I have been asked to ‘contact them urgently’. So what do I say, “hi… what’s the position and job description again?” Is that unprofessional on my part.

Re: Vat to do...

yes it would be.

was it an online advert? you could call up the HR lady and say you want to prep for the interview, can she tell you more about the position.

^^

Good move by Ravage.

Re: Vat to do…

seeing as it was such a loooong time ago…i would be inclined to ask them whether the job description has changed at all after all this time, this should hopefully lead you to some probing questions about what the job descriptioin was !? (presuming u would have some idea of the position applied)

I guess asking straight out of you had applied for would be kinda of no no.

on the other hand, worst come to worst … might as well ask stright up ! its better than going for an interview and not knowing wat they want :phati:

Re: Vat to do...

i was in the same situation...i had posted my resume on every single job search website in the GTA, applied for every single company that was hiring in my field (even though i was still in school at that time)..and a few months later when i was goign to graduate , i get this call from this company for an interview...actually it was a voicemail from this chinese man with a really bad accent..lol..i coudnt even hear the companys name clearly...so anyways i called back and eventually found out the name of the company (by THEIR voicemail), set up an interview...and even at this time i had no idea what the company or even job was for...lol....but then the smartness in me began to kick in...i reasearched the company on the net..found their website..so at least i knew what they actually did...and went for my job interview....well after 2 interviews i got the job!!!!! it was only after i was reading the job acceptance contract that i knew what the job was for..lol...and masha allah , after 3 years i am sitll working for the same company....

Re: Vat to do...

hmm that's nice mfs :)

Thanks for the advice folks. No it was in the newspaper, I threw away the clipping. I will give them a call tomorrow. I have been told to contact one person directly, no HR person involved in this field.

Re: Vat to do...

Six months is a long time. You can honestly say that you applied for several different positions at that time, and now can't remember which position they plan to interview you, so they should tell you. Had it been six days, and you had lost the newspaper ad, that could be considered careless. With six months, there shouldn't be any expectation that you are holding on to the ad in hopes for the Company to call.

On a going forward basis, a useful tip is to keep electronic copies of the documents you submit. Most people tailor their resumes, and cover letters to match the job description in the ad. So save these tailored documents with the name of the Company in the filename, on your computer in a separate folder. That way any time you hear back from the employer, even if its after many days, you can still go back and re-read your own cover letter and resume submitted to that Company and know which position you submitted the application for.

Re: Vat to do...

I know how you feel catty.
The same thing happened to me with one position. The HR woman and I kept playing phone tag and in the end I gave up on it. And it was a newspaper clipping too.

I finally did go to the interview and was short-listed until the company plans changed and they decided to put off the hiring process for another three months. She now calls me and asks if it's okay for her to contact me in the summer when they review the situation again. I told her fine......

But initially I was very brief and blunt with her. I joked that the whole process of getting the interview date and time was so drawn out that I had already discarded the clipping (use 90 days as your cut-off when you explain things because that's usually the time that HR departments use).

Re: Vat to do...

I dropped my CV at the organisation I work for now, I got a call after almost 6 months too, the guy who called just said come for the test tommorow and hung up the phone.

I could not call back to ask abt the position since I did not know who called, I went in the next day took the test, still unaware of the job description, went in for the interview next day and apart from alot of other questions, I was asked how would i do research about a personality, if I had only two days. Only then I came to know what job they were offering :D

So it happens, I don't think asking would be unproffesional, since most of us apply for a lot of jobs at the same time.

Re: Vat to do...

If I were you I would make some sort of spreadsheet up on companies that you have applied to and add columns like job descriptions, contact names, when you applied, feedback etc . It will make it much easier to keep track of things.
