various 'schools' of thought in Islam

Re: various ‘schools’ of thought in Islam

You mean both of them are similar in their ideas?

Re: various ‘schools’ of thought in Islam

My reading yes. Ghamidi is much more tolerant of others though. He seems closer to the ideology that JI follows.

I think you should ask them. It is better to get information about people from them. This is the correct adab, inshaAllah. Compare what they have to say against the 'Aqeedah At-Tahawiya.

Re: various ‘schools’ of thought in Islam

ghamidi is a sufi based lone ranger
zakir naik is a salafi, basically just reads Quran and Hadiths

Both are known as imams of misguidance

Re: various ‘schools’ of thought in Islam

  1. I don’t have any direct access to them.
  2. I don’t have any idea what ‘Aqeedah At-Tahawiya’ is.

When we say school we typically refer to a fiqh school. These are typically Maliki, Hanafi, Sha’fi and Hanbali … however, when we discuss matters of belief we talk in terms of schools of 'aqidah … At-Tahawi comes from the theological school of Imam Maturidi - who himself was a Hanafi and there are others too … such as a 'Ashari and Azthari … all three are accepted in the Ahl-us-Sunnah …

It is possible to be a Hanafi - 'Asharite or a Sha’fi Maturidite and so on … however most Hanafis are Maturidites and most Malikis are 'Asharites and Sha’fis are split between the two … the majority of Aztharis are from the Hanbali school.

The At-Tahawiya formula is quite basic but because of that it is most widely accepted but it is not so basic that it leaves out any important area … and for this reason it is a very good aid in working out what the outer limit of the Ahl-us-Sunnah should be measured against.

Re: various ‘schools’ of thought in Islam

  1. Where do Barelvi and Deobandi fit in the above scheme of things? [sorry, but my knowledge is such areas is quite weak]

  2. Why do religious people even attempt to describe God and Soul in terms of physics? Almost by definition, God and Soul (or Satan, angels, etc.) are not physical (in the sense that they have to follow laws and properties of physics). Why not just say that we cannot fathom the nature of such things?

Barelvis and Deobandis are both subdivisions of Maturidi, Hanafis … Although they each emphasise different things.

God and Soul are not described in terms of physics … But language and the interaction with other cultures and retractors has forced us to acquire a mode of refinement on speech so as not cause the confusion of literalism and of course over analogising too … The correct things need to be understood as literal and the correct things need to be understood as metaphoric.
