interesting question! it instantly reminded me of the beginning of surah al baqara. i believe it talks about people who say "we believe" when they are with believers but soon their backs turn and they turn away from their words. they fool nobody but themselves...and in a way, they 'vanish' after fullfiling their purpose.
as living creatures, we carry the inherent quality of selfishness. as soon as our purpose is fullfilled, we seek exits dont we?
