A court in Uzbekistan has sentenced twenty-three defendants to prison terms of between sixteen and twenty years for terrorism and anti-constitutional activity.

Ten people received twenty year terms, including two of the main accused, Farhad Khamidov and his brother Ravshan.

Their other brother Kahramon died in prison and was the founder of a non-governmental organisation in Kokand which the prosecution says tried to usurp the role of local authorities.

The charges relate to activities some ten years ago.

The prosecution at the court in the capital, Tashkent, had asked for the death penalty for both Farhad and Ravshan.

Human rights groups and defence lawyers have called the accusations false and dismissed the verdict as unfair.
