Utility of foreign cricket coaches in Asia questioned

**Utility of foreign cricket coaches in Asia questioned **

KARACHI: Pakistan’s former Test captain and wicket-keeper Rashid Latif launched a scathing attack on Tuesday on foreign coaches working with the Asian cricket teams after his former side, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh all flopped in the ICC Champions Trophy.

“The Champions Trophy results lead one to question the wisdom of paying so much money to these foreign coaches who have produced no dramatic results,” Rashid said on Tuesday. “The (Asian cricket) boards must ask themselves, ‘are these people delivering results expected from them’?”

Former England player Bob Woolmer has coached Pakistan since 2004 while India hired ex-Australia captain Greg Chappell last year. Dav Whatmore is in charge of Bangladesh while fellow Australian Tom Moody is the coach of Sri Lanka.

Rashid stated that all the foreign coaches apart from Whatmore, who lifted the fortunes of Sri Lanka when he was in charge of that nation, had failed to live up to expectations. “Even Whatmore has struggled with Bangladesh, confirming the fact a coach is only as good as his team,” said Rashid. “You look at the results of all these teams. There is no improvement from when they had local coaches. Locals are being deprived of an opportunity to work with their national teams.”

Rashid, a highly agile keeper of his era, feared the Asian teams would struggle in next year’s World Cup in the Caribbean.

“Pakistan, Indian and Sri Lankan players are naturally talented,” he noted. “They play cricket by instinct and are more accustomed to respecting their captain than a coach. Their psyche cannot change.”

The statement highlighted in bold may be true of Pakistam than. The Pakistan super stars may listen and respect the clever Inzi more than uncle Bob.

If it’s true that players have more respect for the captain than imagine Pakistan team without a coach and the clever Inzi having to do everything for the team i.e. coaching and leading the side which includes batting & bowling coaching, fielding drills (which he doesn’t apprently do or doesn’t partcipate with enthusim), planning, analysing the opposition etc and of course doing the Tableegh at the same time.

Would they do any better during the World cup without a coach (foreign or desi) and someone like the clever Inzi leading the side?

Lose a game and start questioninng coach if he is from out of country esp if you are brown and coach is white.... thats all normal. When winning all is good.

Coach selection should be purely on merit/credentials and considering various facts such as how comfortable will players be with a foreign coach. Will they even be able to understand what is he saying. Will they be able to communicate to him. Does the coach have an insight into the psyche of the players of that particular region etc. etc.

Any coach that qualifies on the above criteria can be considered. Local vs foreigner should not be converted into a nationalist or ego issue.

ps: Rashid Latif has a history of creating contorversies but I guess he generally chooses the right (hot) topic :)

KCCA chief calls for Woolmer’s sacking

KARACHI, Oct 31: The president of Karachi City Cricket Association, Dr Mohammad Ali Shah on Tuesday urged Pakistan Cricket Board to sack national coach Bob Woolmer in light of the Champions Trophy debacle in India.

“It’s deeply concerning time for PCB in scenario of team’s highly disappointing performance at Mohali,” he said in a statement here. “Woolmer failed to deliver in the Champions Trophy as well as during the tour of England,” he said.“Instead of improving he (Woolmer) has destroyed the Pakistan team. Consistent failure of the openers is also a serious cause of concern for PCB and the nation,” he observed.

“With the World Cup just over four months away, Woolmer is unable to raise the standard of the team and failed to create a balance squad for the global event,” he said.

“If no remedial steps are taken now, Pakistan can suffer the same fate in the forthcoming series against West Indies,” he noted.

He expressed the hope that PCB’s new chairman, Dr Nasim Ashraf, will immediately launch his plan in interest of the nation and the team.

“Foreign coaches of both Pakistan and India failed to improve the performance of the two teams. Despite playing in their own conditions Pakistan and India failed to reach semi-finals of the Champions Trophy,” he added.

Pakistan after beating Sri Lanka in their opening match went down to both New Zealand and South Africa in Group ‘B’.

He called upon the PCB to utilize the services of former stars like Wasim Akram, Mushtaq Mohammad or Asif Iqbal as coach of the national team instead of depending on foreigners.

Similarly, the Indians can take advantage of Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath or Ravi Shastri as coach of their national team, he added.—APP

Abey coach kya ab ja kay khud batting karay ga jub humaray batsmen khud machlyaaN (fishing) kar rahay hotay hain.

Freakin no one talks about sacking the batsmen or bowlers and giving chances to new talent they all talk about their own interest. I bet Rashid is eyeing for a coaching postion with National team and KCCA chief is backing him up.
