Uterine Fibroids experiences? (Ladies only )

Hi, continuing on from my 'menopausal symptoms ’ post about my mum a few weeks ago, after several trips to emergency dept at hospital, she was in intense abdominal pain like contractions+ heavy bleeding, but doctors there only advised to take painkillers and aren’t sure what’s happening as it isn’t to do with menopause. it appears my mum might have fibroids but gp said she cannot be referred for scan until all her tests come back.gotta wait another three weeks. She’s taking norethisterone + codine painkillers. I wanted to find out from you if any members of your family went through the same thing, is hysterectomy the only option left to stop all these symptoms? really confused.

I had a fibroid removed a few months ago. Hysterectomy is not the only option. If you google “fibroid treatments”, TONS of information will come up but here is a link to get you started: Uterine Fibroids-Treatment Overview

I had a robotic laparoscopic myomectomy.

On a side note, I have no idea what tests your mom’s doctors are doing where she has to wait 3 WEEKS. For me, my GYN did a ultrasound (abdominal and then transvaginal) and I knew the same day that it was a fibroid.

A few friends had them and got hysterectomies . Doing fine now.

Depending on how many and how big the fibroids are, you can get a myomectomy or a hysterectomy. Hysterectomy is sometimes preferred for women who are done having their children since fibroids can recur and it takes care of that. 3 weeks is a long time to wait for a scan to check for fibroids but since you're in UK, the health system is different.

^Yes. Hormones or arterial embolizaton can also be used in some cases.

Why does it say (Ladies only)?

Gentlemen don't have fibroids. :)
