By Our Special Correspondent
LAHORE, July 11: Eminent vocalist of the subcontinent, Ustad Salamat Ali Khan is dead. He was 70.
The burial, according to family sources, will take place on Friday because his four sons and a daughter are abroad and they are expected to reach Lahore on Thursday evening.
The great exponent of classical music, who was conferred Sitara-i-Imtiaz for his services to this discipline of performing arts, had been suffering from a host of diseases.
He died in the early hours of Wednesday leaving behind his widow, four sons and four daughters and a large number of his fans.
Ustad Salamat was a diabetic and this had badly affected his eyesight. He had almost lost his vision and lived in this condition for several years. He was also a heart patient. He was almost confined to his Samanzar Colony residence in Lahore and had left performing at music functions since long.
His three sons, Sharafat Ali Khan, Shafqat Ali Khan and Saqafat Ali Khan are in the United States and have been singing there for a good number of years. One of his four daughters is also a US citizen. His fourth son Latafat Ali Khan is settled in the United Kingdom.
To his credit is the founding of the tradition of two brothers making a pair in classical singing. He paired with his elder brother Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan for the first time and this was followed by many exponents of classical music in the years to come.
