US's score card on the war on terror

In Pakistan our liberals have got the habit of calling out Pakistan army on their performance on the so called war on terrorism, would they also now ask the Americans as to what objectives have they achieved during the past 14 years? [SUB][/SUB]

Re: US’s score card on the war on terror

@ehsan bhai, this blog post I wrote more than three years ago.

before discussing the conflict at hand, lets go a few decades back to the theater of war between South and North Vietnam and the role of Cambodia during the war. There are a lot of similarities between the two conflicts.

In 1959 Vietnam war began, between Western supported South Vietnam and Communist North. The communist rebels from the North took refuge in the jungles of South Vietnam to fight foreign occupation. The US involvement in the conflict escalated during the early 1960’s. Cambodia led by Prince Sihanouk tried to remain neutral during the war to avoid larger regional conflict. The Americans believed that Cambodia is playing a double game, supporting the Vietnam rebels on one hand and allowing Americans to conduct operations in their border areas on the other hand. The Americans used B-52 aircrafts (loaded with napalm and cluster bombs) to attack terrorist sanctuaries on the Vietnam Cambodia border. With the result hundreds of thousands of people were killed in Cambodia alone.

Due to the war engulfing Cambodia, Khmer Rouge came into existence. In 1970, US supported General Lon Nol deposed Prince Sihanouk who then allied himself with Khmer Rouge. Due to heavy American bombardment and US supported puppet regime ruling Cambodia, Khmer Rouge found new recruits. In early 1970s Vietnamese and US forces invaded Eastern parts of Cambodia. By 1972 the Khmer Rouge comprised of 50000 people many of them had joined to take revenge from Americans. In 1973 the Americans vacated Vietnam and the Vietnamese withdrew from Cambodia. With the result Khmer Rouge came into power in Cambodia and started genocide of their own people. In 1978 Vietnam attacked Cambodia and installed a puppet regime there, in 1988 Vietnamese started withdrawing their troops and a cease fire was declared in 1991.
