Is anyone on the forum studying for usmle part 1?
For those of you who have already passed, what do you think is a good score and does getting a poor mark mean a person will never get a residency?

Re: USMLE part 1
My sis took it last yr, now preparing for Step 2.
Good score depends on many things like visa status, residency priority etc. There's no real cut-off, but mostly 85+. Most people I know got in 90's so I guess its do-able... and don't worry, almost everyone gets residency here, there are more positions than candidates applying, you just need an average score.
Good Luck you both..!
Re: USMLE part 1
^ Thanks.
Getting a residency is more like a luck to me. I have friends who had 99/98 in Step1 and Step2 but they could not get a visa
I have friends who had 94-91 in Step1 and Step2 but they could not get residency...
I have friends who had 78-79 in Step1 and Step2 and they did get in .....
Hehe.... Its different for different people... But these days, 85+ is considered the same as was 78+, a few years ago. Most of the people are scoring in the range of 98 now.....

good score depends on what you want 85 is great for FM but gooluck if u want surgery or radiology
aim for atleast 90+
if you get bad scores make sure get a greencard or nationality somehow
visa issues are a BIG problem, much bigger than residency
Re: USMLE part 1
Ill be taking USLME after a yr or so...having goljen notes to study are best.
Re: USMLE part 1
get the maximum score like for instance 98 or 99 for residency of choice.
otherwise get one like pathology ,endure it 1 yr then choose again
Re: USMLE part 1
Im actually a med student from the uk and have thought abt going to US but i dont have much knowledge about what resources i should use etc.
At the moment im using Kaplan, first aid and my own uni stuff. i have heard alot abt goljan but should i just stick to kaplan?. is it true that most of the exam is based on pathology? I have the kaplan anatomy book and its absolutely huge, what areas should i concentrate on most?
many ppl talk abt scores in terms of the 2 digit thingy but what does 85, 90 etc correspond to on the 3 digit scale. Is the exam out of 350 and for example would 90 mean something like 240/350.
Thanks for helping me out, the info everyone has given has been really helpful

Noop,
Don't consider Pathology so low.....
It is not easy to get into. You can try and you'll know. Pathology is one of the highly demanded specialty these days.

Roughly 90 is equal to 220
Re: USMLE part 1
Im not saying pathology is hard or not important, i want to know if most of the questions in the exam are based on pathology and what other subjects are high yield. Are all subjects allocated an equal number of questions?
Re: USMLE part 1
Well I have heard from rellies in med skool that Pathology is 60% of USMLE. That and pharm make up the bulk of it, apparently.
Re: USMLE part 1
No there is no such thing, if you have it read about the exam in Qbook that will help
Re: USMLE part 1
I dont have Qbook.......
Re: USMLE part 1
I believe in exam technique, theres no point in spending lots of time studying anatomy when most questions will be on pathology. Any info on the issue would be appreciated.
Re: USMLE part 1
u have to know your anatomy, physiology, biochem etc before you can really get into patho and pharma anyway, so it makes sense that patho and pharma are the bulk of the questions because to know the answer, you have to know all the subjects, and it makes more real world sense that way as well. Their not testing your knowlege of what you can memorize but how well you can figure out a problem based on the knowledge you have gained.
Re: USMLE part 1
^ agree hundred percent! Its all combined !
Re: USMLE part 1
you can get it for Rs 50 or so in pak it is worth it.....
just do ALL of kaplan books and the Qbank+Qbook you will get >90
dont waste time in snell.robbins ,katzung or any textbook
and for God's sake dont think first aid is sufficent( unless you have brilliant background knowledge)
Re: USMLE part 1
