Using Sex to Sell Books

I have caught up with some reading these days and I’m trying out literature that has been written recently, like in the last few years or so.

I’ve noted that a lot of authors these days are using sex to sell their books - fiction and non-fiction.

I don’t get it. Have u guys noticed this trend? Its really annoying, because the point of the book gets totally sidetracked with all the sex in the book. I might as well rent a porn movie.

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

The latest Harry Potter cover has Hermoine dressed as a nurse.

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

^ how would you know?

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

yes this is true... its got to point of being ridiculous

have you ever read the books by Jean A Auel...she ruins them it doesnt add to the story or the plot...it puts me off.

I was given a novel to proof read and was surprised at some of what was written the auther was a Vicar...he said it was because its what the public want

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

surely the vicar was hitting on you

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

Well sex and romance novels tend to be written by women for women dont they?..men dont tend to buy books…porn is sufficient…but supposedly sex novels give the womens perspective on how sex should be…and this is quite a popular niche…a lot of the female public does enjoy reading sex orientated books…

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

naughty, why r some werds in ur posts always linked to a search engine?

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

He thinks we don't know what they mean.

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

Lol i actually have no control over that...if anyone can tell me why that happens im quite happy to remove it...

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

The validity of using sex depends upon the context. Sex, like almost every other literary technique out there, can often feel gratutious and drawn out. The reason behind this are three-fold.

  1. The author does not know how to write a good sex scence.
  2. The sex scene was redundent.
  3. You do not like reading sex scenes at all.

The first two are obvious problems, the third can only be helped by the reader himself. You have to realize that at some places sex is necessary to drive the point home. It can be essential to the story, to the narrative progression, the development of characters and as a facet of their interpersonal relationships. At other places, it helps ease off the tension and provide a satisfactory conclusion to a plot or two. As I said earlier, It totally depends on the context it is being used in.

Of course, you can always read Georgette Hyers, Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Anne Bronte, William Makepeace Thackery and others of similar ilk for PG reading.

And yes, the writers are using sex to sell books. Just like other writers use wars, scandels, sports, disasters and other similar gimmicks to sell their books. One would think that it would be sufficently obvious that a discernable reader will be able to distinguish between 'real literature' and 'gimmick bestsellers.'

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

Back in 10th grade I borrowed a novel from a friend which had a sex scene stretched over 5 pages. Pressure had been building for sometime and the South responded by firing the first shot straight up into the air. I knew I had reached my puberty!

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

No. X - check out the book Mage Heart. That's my idea of unnecessary sex.

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

Books like 'Mage Heart' are my idea of unnecessary reading. They are generally written to cater the tastes of a specific niche; the fantasy equivalent of bodice-rippers, If you will. Sex scenes in these sort of books are like breathing to humans.

excerpt from an amazon reader review of the book:

'I am tempted to say that this story is most likely to appeal to women, as a major theme of the book is Dion's 'becoming a woman' and the slow building of her relationship with Andre. (Andre, by the way, is one of the most fascinating and vivid characters I have come across. Ever.)** As for vulgarity...well, Kitten is the Duke's mistress, and her friends are women of similar 'character'. You have to expect some talk about sex. I never found it that horrifying, but those easily offended may wish to back off**.'.

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

your buying them so atleast for you its working :p

Re: Using Sex to Sell Books

Haha, amazon reader review - it didn't occur to me - thanks, I'll do that next time. I usually just peruse the shelves and see whatever blurb seems interesting. The blurb on the back of the book didn't mention anything sexual or romantic.

It was indeed a horrible book, although Andre's character WAS quite vivid. My journal readers will know who he is. Haha.

ewwwwwwwwwwww.
