Using old clothes

Re: Using old clothes

:hehe:

Re: Using old clothes

yes. The word sounded familiar when I read your post, but I couldn’t remember what it was. What a compact word for ‘mela kapRa’. We nowadays say ‘farsh ughaR waro kaRo i.e. Farsh saaf karne wala kapra’ instead this handy word ‘TapRi’ :bummer:

Re: Using old clothes

In my family, at the beginning of spring/end of winter when putting away all of the heavy winter coats and stuff, my mum would make us sort out our cupboards and get rid of the clothing we no longer wore or didn't want. She would then sort through those and donate the things that were in good condition to charity and cut the rest up to use as rags around the house. We usually give our cast off traditional clothing, which is usually only worn once or twice as we usually only wear it at functions or family gatherings, to my grandmother to take and give to charity when visiting back home during the summer.

Re: Using old clothes

Just a question from those who in west. Aren't their any markets like Light House , Landa Bazar selling second hand clothes?

Re: Using old clothes

usually the poors living is huts are called tapRi vaas as well, maybe as they use old cloths as roofs of the huts or in making fences around them.

Re: Using old clothes

there are second hand shops, but many people donate them in charities.

Re: Using old clothes

Yeah, there are loads of shops which sell second hand clothes. Many charitable organizations run shops to raise money for their cause.

Re: Using old clothes

I think in east traditionally wearing old clothes (used by another person) was considered bad and the word Utran always got negative meaning. Even now people go and purchase stuff from second hand marrkets like landa bazar, but they make sure that it doesn't look second hand stuff and they try to avoid being caught buying such stuff.

Is this psyche prevail in west as well?

Re: Using old clothes

There are. Where I live, the two biggest stores that sell second hand items (not just clothes) are Value Village and Honest Ed.

I have also seen in the neighbourhood that some people will leave their items in a bag outside their home with a note saying something like "please help yourself if you're interested". Or they'll hold a garage sale if they are moving and try to sell their items at half price or whatever.

Re: Using old clothes

Not really. In recent years, it's become rather trendy among younger people to buy vintage clothing from second hand shops and the like. There are even second hand shops that specialise in vintage and designer goods.

Re: Using old clothes

I like the business model so to speak of Goodwill Industries, a non-profit organization that is headquartered in Maryland and supports philanthropic programs across North and South America. It collects and sells gently used clothing and household goods in Goodwill stores that provide a reasonably decent shopping experience often comparable to other small retail stores. At the start of each Spring and Fall shopping season, Goodwill also partners with some large department stores in the US that offer discount coupons to customers for each donated clothing item. I guess that partnership slightly incentivizes consumers to clean up their closets and buy new stuff from the department stores, probably helping increase their sales, while Goodwill gains by getting the still trendy donated items from the last season or so. All in all, Goodwill operates an extensive network of retail stores, generating a revenue of several billion dollars each year that help fund job training, employment assistance and other charitable programs especially targeting individuals with disabilities. Quite impressive.

Re: Using old clothes

There are donation boxes jagah jagah... Goodwill stores... Thrift shops...

Re: Using old clothes

I remember once I was wearing my father's coat (which he had bought from UK when he was there for studies) while travelling in public transport. One person asked me "from where have you got this piece". I wanted to punch him on his face... :(
