I used mine too...with the atms its better to get the money out and then use the cash...other then that Credit cards worked fine..this was in Lahore btw
Re: using credit/debit cards in pakistan
very safe… :k:
Re: using credit/debit cards in pakistan
Better to use Credit Cards.....as you have more security against fraud/errors...whereas with a debit card it is your money thats at risk as opposed to with a credit card where it's the lenders money!!!
Not been to Pakistan, but in India, found that not a lot of places accepted DEBIT cards...more CREDIT cards?
Re: using credit/debit cards in pakistan
safe..yes,..............cost you an arm and a leg to withdraw....yes!!!

Re: using credit/debit cards in pakistan
Credit card is definitely a better bet but you will end up paying foreign exchange fees and the foreign exchange rate is not good either. Your are better off taking cash or travelers checks.
As far as Debit card concerned I would strongly recommend that you not use debit card ANYWHERE. I know, I always skimmed through such alarming calls and never paid attention to Debit card fruad until it happened to me. We just discovered that my wife’s identity was stolen and our bank account is completely wiped clean. Please read this article for details. I know it’s a long article, but worth your time. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11731365/
So, beware of the debit card fraud; stop using debit cards at unknown ATM’s and even for purchases. Debit cards definately do not give you the same protection as Credit cards do and once the money is out of your account, the bank has no vested interest.
Re: using credit/debit cards in pakistan
I dont think there is a difference using debit or credit cards in security terms. Credit cards may charge you hefty interest for cash advance compared to debit card will charge only admin charges.
security for both is same in technical terms both are guranteed by Visa or MasterCard. IF you have used for any transaction, you are not liable for it depending on your bank and your own record (how many times you have been victim of such crime).
I always use debit card in Pakistan ATMs - mostly work international branch ones Standard Chartered, Citi, Abn Amro, Alfallah etc.
you could have same issue with debit or credit card if some one has installed any thing to ATM, it can happen anywhere in the world not specific to Pakistan. you just need to be vigilant.

This is not true. The terms and conditions are not set by Visa or MasterCard. They are set by issuing bank and can vary quite a bit. The terms and conditions of Debit cards are quite different than Credit cards. You should take some time to read the fine prints.
One thing that we all can agree on is that when you use debit card they money goes out of account instantly and if something goes wrong, the burden is on you to prove that you are not liable and bank should give you your money back. In Credit cards you are using banks money and if something is wrong the burden in the bank to show that the charges are legitimate and you are liable.
From a pure technical perspective, not all the systems are the same. There are ATM machines and other systems out there who caches your pin along with card numbers for some time and there have been numerous cases in US where criminals have used to information to wipe people clean.
I have personally gone through this situation and have come to this conclusion after lot of research that debit cards should be avoided.
Re: using credit/debit cards in pakistan
only cash is the best thing to use and it helps stay within one's means.
the scam and gimmick in the retail banking business of credit lending is a quick sand of enticing weak consurmers in to a borrower status until they are head deep in loan over non-needful wants.
best thing to do, not own any credit card.
and it is possible.
besides that, the whole risk of fraudulent activities on the part of the lenders and the borrowers and then the defaulter/bankrupt statuses to contend with together with their future economic strain.
there is a reason why interest monies are forbidden by the religion and yet we are guilty of the use of borrowed monies.
in Pakistan, it will be very, very bad, if credit card use picked up.
since the inflation, and consumer market trends are very non conducive for a weak consumer.
by weak consumer, it is meant that a consumer, who easily falls prey to purchasing by the plastic cards. after all, the paymet dates do come on quickly & the grace periods dont last for ever.
best,
Dushwari

Re: using credit/debit cards in pakistan
I've used them mainly to withdraw money since most places where I wanted to buy stuff didn't accept cards. Didn't ever have any problems.
Re: using credit/debit cards in pakistan
i've always wondered how does the credit card work there, as far as the money rate goes? Do they use the standard federal exchange rate to bill you back here in dollars when you shop there?.....or are you just charged in dollars even pak.?

It depends on the credit card company some companies have higher exchange rate then other. Some charge 3% currency exchange fee and some charge 3% or $5 depending on whichever one is more. I have capital one and they charge 1%.
