Using a non-desi makeup artist?

Would you do it? Or did you?

Linda Chiriac has already been mentioned in another thread (isn’t she gorgeous btw!) and there are some other amazing non-desi muas around..

What do you think are the possible pros and cons?

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

My sister used an english non-desi MUA for both her wedding and valima, and the she did an excellent job. The same MUA has done a few of my friend's make-up, and she managed to make it asian-bridaly enough without over-caking or looking too OTT. If you understand make-up and the face, then you can do a good job regardless of being desi or not, I spose.

Having said that, if you go for an asian bridal look then there's not many non-desi MUAs out there who can give the 'asian' bride feel that a lot of people want.

I would consider it myself cos I can imagine that they'll give a lighter, subtle look. But then I would also consider some of the bigger MUA names cos I like their styles too.

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

^Who did your sis use if you don't mind me asking? Is she from Essex because I'm always on the lookout for a good mua :D

I really like Kayleigh Whiting's work.. She often does Lucy Meck's makeup.. Apart from that there are those brilliant celeb ones out there as well.. Sonia Ali (soniaxfyza on IG), Huda/ Heidi Kattan (hudabeauty on IG), Evon Wahab (makeupbyevon on IG).. Am defo going to book Sonia at some point or do her class in London..

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

Ugh I'm so torn between Linda (she is stunning and I think I've developed a fan-girl crush on her) and a desi girl. My biggest fear is the dupatta pinning because I've seen some HORRIBLE jobs where it killed the entire look/ruined the outfit. I always figure that a non desi would be able to do the makeup fine as long as you emphasized that you wanted more dramatic eyes. But because I'm biased and desi, I would rather have someone that understands it more so if I went with a non-desi, it'd be someone that's done a ton of desi brides. Even those though, you have to look closer at because I stumbled upon a pretty good MUA here in CA and she does a ton of desi brides but mostly indian and they're "look" is definitely more wester and muted.

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

I say don't do it. Go with a desi who does the style of makeup you like, you don't want to take any chances.

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

You know what I'm gonna say about a trial lol :P

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

Not every bride necessarily wants a traditional look.. some people like different styles..

With a trial beforehand I don’t think they need to take chances either.. or is that a naive thing to say :hmmm:

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

What? :D

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

Deeba - her name’s Michelle, she’s not from Essex though, I think Barnet? North-ish London anyway.
This is her - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Glam-it-with-Mac-Professional-Make-up-Artistry/120248866353 - her name’s michelle macgregor.
She did my sister’s and my best friend’s bridals - mehndi, wedding and valima, the pics aren’t on the album. Worth a look anyway, we really liked her trials and she a dicsount for booking her on more than one day

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

Bwahaha go for one!! Always!

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

If the non-desi artist can define my best features and apply foundation in such a way that it gives good coverage but looks natural...then yes, I'd go with the non-desi. Sometimes I think that desi brides have sooo much makeup on that it 1) looks more overdone than natural...and 2) makes them look older. :(

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

I went for desi as most non desi ones dont have that polished look, there are very few non desi who give the same glam factor and when I same say glam I dont mean caked on.

that being said for a formal occasion I would deffo use. There is a lady named Louise Dyet on instagram who is brill and Ive started following the people you girls have recommended above and theyre all really good too. If they're of that standard then why not?

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

Where I live in Toronto, it's actually an Asian (I believe she's chinese) woman who most girls run to for their bridal. Her name is Shirley Wu. She's amazing and I used her as well. She's learned all the names for the different styles of desi clothing and jewelry too. It's cute and she's amazing.

Sorry I'm not from UK so I'm not really familiar with the makeup artists there.

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

^Yeah, I forget to mention Shirley Wu!

Looking at her bridal makeup you'd never guess she was't desi

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

Shirley is Chinese but used to live in India ;)
She speaks Hindi/Urdu too.
thats why she's so familiar with desi makeup and bridal hair styling.

Re: Using a non-desi makeup artist?

Oh yes the Wu's!!

However I dont even count them as non desi...!!

I got my make up done 2x at the salon 2 weeks ago and their Urdu is perfect!! They told me theyre from Lahore and thats where they grew up - it really was shocking to hear their perfect non accented Lahori style Urdu!! it honestly did not feel like any of the ladies weren't Pakistani, their mannerism and lehja were all so natural.

These ladies are brilliant by the way!
