how long is the useful life of a laptop ??
i have a HP T2450, recently bought… this is the first time me buying any laptop.. its going pretty smooth so far… im just curious to know whats the useful life of a laptop is?..

Its from two minutes to 15 years and beyond.

Most corporation depreciate Laptops over 3 - 4 years. I had a Dell Latitude C600 from 2002 which I discarded in 2007. It was still doing the job good enough for MS Office and internal database applications.

My living room laptop (Sony Vaio) was bought in 2003 and its still going strong. The screen has dimmed a little or maybe it's just in comparison to my new Vaio bought last year.

At my work I get a new laptop every 15 months!! do I need a new laptop every 15 months ... absolutely not. At home my wife still uses an old HP Omnibox pentium 3 laptop and it works like a charm.
If you look after your laptop is should last you a very long time. Quite often its your luck ... I have seen new laptop broken down after few months of use.

Well it really depends on what you are doing with it. If you are into multimedia development kind of stuff, even the state-of-the-art-laptops are not powerful enough for that.
There is a paradigm shift, now laptops are being used as servers as well. And then the trend for virtualization, that all needs more and more resources.
And then the newer laptops are less energy hungry, have more embedded security related features and so on.

It depends on what you mean by “useful life”. Barring any manufacturing defects, the hardware is bound to outlast your software requirements. In about 3 to 5 years, with a myriad of new applications and increased processing requirements, we tend to start looking for more efficient technologies. Laptops are no different.
I actually have a laptop from 7-8 years ago that still can still run windows 95 and basic office apps quite capably – but alas, I don’t use win95 anymore, so that laptop is just lying around idle.

That all depends some corps. do it every year. All our hardware is leased and desktops and laptops are replaced every year with teh latest and greatest.

ok thanks guy for ur valuable comments.. this is the specification of the laptop im talkin about and do let me know what u think will be the useful life of this laptop. I usually just use laptop for internet surfin purposes , basically just for entertainment purpose. So do let me know what u think.

my laptop is already dying I think. I’ve had it for about 4 years now and every time I take it out of the standby mode I get the blue screen of death and it restarts. :hinna:I don’t know what ruined it but I know it’s not my fault.
