Use of Medicine v/s natural remedies

So many doctors believe that in today’s time and age we have started using way too much medicine , as a result of which our bodies are getting resistant to low doses hence the need for the medics to give us higher doses in everything .. be it paracetamol or other meds

Do you think its healthy and wise to try to avoid medicines and pills with kids ( the next generation) and instead try to cure them through natural sources ? leave the meds to be used as a last resort?

Re: Use of Medicine v/s natural remedies

i avoid medicine as much as i can but i think some people just go 2 another extreme by totally bycotting medicines at the expense of their health.

Re: Use of Medicine v/s natural remedies

That's pretty much how my mum bought us up. She didn't give us calpol at the slightest sniffle.

When I do need to take a painkiller now, one tablet (where they advise two) does the trick.

I think the problem is more to do when people run to drugs for relief without addressing the real problem. Why do you get so many headaches? Or colds? Or whatever.

p.s. Did you read the link in the calcium intake thread you posted? I thought it was interesting because it links tooth decay with carb diets... and increasingly people are becoming aware of the dangers of carb diets in regards to type ii diabetes and pcos in women. Diet is something which will probably be more important for me if I have kids.

I agree Stoppit ...

I remember my mom hardly ever gave us meds when we were kids ... we were treated by mostly the natural or herbal totka's ... as a result Alhumdullillah I respond to little doses of medicines if needed .. which is quite a relief ...

Stoppit I did briefly but I have saved it and will be reading it a bit more in detail in a day or two ... by the way thanks so much for sharing , I have forwarded it to my sister as well :)

Re: Use of Medicine v/s natural remedies

I think a hollistic approach to any illness is required and thats how we are taught in med school. We are taught we must always take - a bio ( medicine ) socio ( any other non pharamceutical things and persons life circumstances) and psycho ( psychological issues and underlying causes) into account, and examined in our exams for non pharmalogical therapies.

So for example. Patient comes in with headache, you advise them that a pain killer is short term releif but it is possible the headache is related to stress and tension and discuss relaxation etc.

Lots of times patients blame the doctor as running to meds too quickly and on the other side as a future doctor I sometimes say its the patients. They WANT meds they feel like you havent done anything if you just 'talk'.

I think a holistic approach is the best approach.

I Agree, in UK you have to be dying to get the DR to give you a prescription, that is once you have waited over a week for the appointment to arrive, and by then your more or less cured. I can probably count on 1 hand the amount of times iv been to the Docs, and I will not take any form of medication unless i am totally out of it, the only thing i can recall is anti bodies for tonsilitus.

However Hubs was born and brought up in Pak, and his mindset is so different, he has to gulp down tabs at the first signs of a headache, and funnily enough if i happen to mention how tired i feel, he suggests i take 2 paracetamol :hayaa: cause that should help me feel fresh. he absolutly loves the meds, in fact the more there is the better the Doc !!!which is the same belief his parents hold.:smack:

Re: Use of Medicine v/s natural remedies

Is this really true (other UK dwellers)? That's horrible.

Re: Use of Medicine v/s natural remedies

NO...i wudn't waste my single dime on those useless medicines...period! :)

Re: Use of Medicine v/s natural remedies

They will only see you the same day if it's an emergency and depending on how busy your surgery is, it can be difficult. There are walk in clinics, where you can wait and see a doc the same day, if you can travel to it. For more routine stuff, you have to wait.

Re: Use of Medicine v/s natural remedies

Depends on the surgery. Many same day appointments are saved even non emergency ones.

^Must be outside London.

Re: Use of Medicine v/s natural remedies

It is extremely dangerous to take medicines without doctors advise as people use medicines in normal conditions as they eat and drink breakfast, lunch and dinner. The pharmaceutical companies introduce medicines for every little problem e.g if your take long breath then you should use this medicine and if you feel pain in your right finger then take this medicine.
