USA forces Israel not to sell advanced radar to India

This one got missed because of the focus in WA on the Iraq war. Good thing this happened, because India with the Phalcon would be very dangerous - the Phalcon is the type of radar that could dramtically change the outcome of a war. It would enable India to know the precise location, altitude, heading and speed of every single Pakistani plane in the combat region.

NEW DELHI, April 6: The United States has persuaded Israel into postponing a billion dollar defence deal with India involving the sale of Israeli Phalcon Awacs radar warning system , saying that at this juncture it could trigger tensions between India and Pakistan, news reports said on Sunday.

“Under American pressure, Israel grudgingly has agreed to suspend the sale of an advanced airborne radar warning system to India,” India’s right-wing extremist Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) reported on its website, quoting the Forward Magazine.

“Washington fears that the sale will increase tensions between India and Pakistan, as the Bush administration wages war in Iraq and keeps a watchful eye on North Korea,” the report said.

It said Israeli sources in Washington told the Forward that Israel has agreed to defer the $1 billion sale of the Phalcon Awacs system, but has not cancelled it.

“The American request comes as the Bush administration is asking Congress to approve a generous aid package for Israel, featuring a $1 billion grant to cover defence-related expenses and $9 billion in loan guarantees,” the RSS report said.

According to the Israeli business daily Globes, the United States conditioned the $1 billion grant on Israel’s suspending the deal, the RSS report said.

The American request is reminiscent of one made by the Clinton administration in August 2000, when it pushed Israel to cancel a $250 million sale of the Phalcon to China. Then, the United States was worried that the early warning system could be used by China against American forces in case of a military conflict over Taiwan.

Israel unsuccessfully attempted to use its friends on Capitol Hill to beat back the administration’s opposition. The short showdown strained relations between Jerusalem and Washington, and between Israel and China," the report said. It added that Israel had to financially compensate the Chinese.

“The India deal is somewhat different. Israeli sources say that the United States, having previously granted its approval, is only asking Israel to put the deal on hold, not to cancel it,” the Forward report said.

 US stops Israel??? and that from selling it to India??? Am I smoking or what?

Exactly.

no U.S pressure can hold back israel from accomplishing this deal.there hasbeen a great level of co-operation between both the countries since both the countries have established diplomatic ties in the early 1990's and both the countries have high level of military co-operation.already india and israel have made many deals in the field of military co-operation and israel has supplied military surveillance devices for indian military to tackle the menance of cross border terrorism.

u.s had imposed a ban on the sale of a particular naval surveillance device two years ago to india by israel, but the technology reached india in months and the deal was expected to made in the south indian naval base camp cochin.israeli engineers are working shoulder to shoulder with indian engineers there and there is a growing presence of israeli engineers in the south indian strategic naval base.

there were press reports of israeli planes were being used consistently ,and israeli planes coming and going during the high tension period that mounted between india and pakistan following the kaluchak incident in 2002 may...

i think this deal also will be made through under the table and both the countries have a long record of making such deals in such fashion.both the countries may have decided to let u.s whine as much as it wants, but the real bite always keep its presence...

I would ask for the money back if I were you :hehe:

Selling an AWACS rader like that secretly isn't really possible. It's such a huge system, both in terms of the physical systems involved, the support infrastructure required, and most of all, the energy emissions when its operating, that within a month of it arriving in India, a dozen countries around the world will know about it.

Of course, ISI will know the day it arrives or earlier ;)

If it was just crates of missiles, that would be easier to do secretly. Smuggling an AWACS radar is a totally different proposition.

so it might be difficult to sell it under the table but its NOT IMPOSSIBLE rite? :-)

"so it might be difficult to sell it under the table but its NOT IMPOSSIBLE rite? :-)"

OK braniac, then when someone sees the massive radar system which sits atop a 747 aircraft, the Indian Gov't can just say "we found it".

hey with americans involvement, anything is possible :-)
for eg : kennedy can be killed with a magic bullet :-)
