Actually there is a great deal of anxiety amongst most immigrants that I know of, about these protests by Mexicans.
Practically everyone I know is either him/herself going through the citizenship/greencard/workvisa process at CIS (formerly known as INS); or at a minimum have a loved-one going through it.
The process of getting immigration is very time consuming and the system is extremely back-logged as it is. Some people are waiting for 5-8 years in the process. If there is any move to afford amnesty or any expedited guest-worker program for Mexicans, significant resources of CIS will be moved and allocated towards the new program, and people who are already in the line following the legal process will have to wait even longer. This is such a crappy situation all around.

The problem is govrrnment is mixing illegal and legal immigrants. Have you seen the details of HR 4437, passed in December 2005? It’s a crazy piece of legistlation. I hope it doesn’t become the law or … America will become a totalitarian country.
HR 4437 talks about non-practical measures to be taken in the name of streamlining the immigration system. For instance proposal of having a new SSN caard issued, with a magnetic strip that will be readible for the Immgrants or Aliens or even residents. And making it mandatory for Employers to check everyone’s work status through a free hotline. The trial system has failed in several states. Current system is so much flawed that the USCIS system does not have the correct or updated information on a case, while they are issuing conflicting letters on the same case. It’s a mess. So if the system can’t have their doucments updated, and if some employer checks it, and informs the CIS about that person. The person would be simply imprisoned and deported. If you do not wish to be deported for certain reasons, you simply stay in jail for indefinite period. Since this legistlation considers any such person as committing a felony (no chance of getting heard or validate the fact that the person in fact does have the valid work authorization). Cases heard in the judge will be decided on single judge’s discretion and will not be open to appeal at all. In fact one person I know has already gone through such a thing, went to collect work authorization, CIS arrested saying you are out of status, imprisoned and then deported the person. Imagine that person who had a life here, a house, everything, had no right to go and wind-up or appeal or anything? Another case I personally know got H-1b approved on one hand and got a deportation letter on the other hand? Two different yet very very important documentation from the same organization? Is this justice and democratic values this country is proud of? How are they passing a legislation, knowing that their own system is in a big mess. Channel the funds towards streamlining the backlog, before initiating something new. But this new legislation basically gives a free hand to throw all the imigrants out of this country for any excuse, no appeal or reprieve available. The local Sheriff will be implementing the Federal Immigration Law, which may not be bad if the system is streamlined, but with current mess, you can expect no rights for any non-citizen, even if they are legal here. I simply don't understand how illegal immigrants can openly declare that they are illegal here and march infront of everyone? even stores were advertising that.
But on the plus side, look, people protesting peacefully despite the highly charged emotions and uncertain future. Now where does that not happen.. hmmm.. maybe in that country that starts with a P... Panama. Yeah, people in Panama go nuts when they protest.

P.S. I forgot to mention in my post one thing about the recent legislation HR 4437, it exempts Cubans and Mexicans from those felony or deportation laws. So we can see clearly who is that legislation geared towards. All the people whose name start with M perhaps ......

hey the anthem is in english, sing the anthem in english, how lazy does one have to be to not even bother to learn to sing the anthem in english.
on a second thought, the way most people assault people's hearing with their completely off "singing" I hereby suggest that all national anthems should eb sung only in sign langauge.

True. The immigrants from various nations in US have marched peacefully to make their point across while in Europe they fight eachother (as is the case in UK) or burn cars and hit bystanders etc (as was the case in France). :P
PS: the anthem that got translated in spanish and played by various DJs on spanish based radios and sung by a few in public is a separate issue from yesterdays march. As far as I know, many Latinos and Chicanos didnt actually support the idea of translating the anthem into spanish.
