My name is M N and I am a resident of Karachi , Pakistan.I did apply to US consulate Islamabad for student visa in mid of Nov 2002 and I was granted visa but then told me for hold . Now it has been more than 6 weeks and my session is going to start from 6th of Jan. and only 1 week is remaining in that.I am now desperate to listen about my passport. Several of my friends did submit their applications after me and they have got their stamped passports but I am still waiting .
assuming there's no negative properties associated with your application, no it's not fair. But you don't have a week...just a couple of days. better get you mayor or MLA or whoever has some clout to make some hone calls to your ministry of education. simultaneously try and have your school (in US) call INS
Yuppp I have been calling to US Islamabad Consulate but no clearnace from washington is their reply .. i have contacted INS too ...no reply .... no use of conatct to misnitry of education , i know they cant do any thing .....
You have to contact the US Consulate where you have applied for your visa i.e Islamabad. No need to contact about INS though as you've never been to the US before.

You don't need a clearance from Washington if you're applying for a Job/Student visa.

Correction: All male visitors, aged 18-45, from designated countries (read, muslim countries) need clearance from FBI. No exception!! He's right that ministries winistty in pakistan can't do anythign about this. Its an entirely internal matter within the working on State department and justice department and even INS has nothing to do with it. All he can do is keep inquiring and wait. Better to inquire in person...
