US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

According to CNN sources, the US Navy plans to shoot down that failed satellite at 2230 ET from a ship west of Hawaii. The idea is to get a shot off as early as possible in case a second or third attempt is required. The $10 million missile fired from the USS Lake Erie will not carry a warhead. Instead, the 22,000mph impact on the school-bus sized satellite combined with the exploding hydrazine fuel tank should blast the satellite into bite-sized chunks expected to burn up in the atmosphere.

Also I believe the Lunar eclipse is tonight too…around the same time.

Total lunar eclipse February 20: Americas, western Europe

On the evening of Wednesday, February 20, 2008, the greatest beauty (mid-point) of the total lunar eclipse will occur at approximately 10:26 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on the east coast of the Americas, 7:26 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST) on the west coast, and 03:26 Universal Time (UT).
The entire total lunar eclipse is visible from South America and most of North America.
Skygazers along the west coast of North America will miss the early stages of the partial eclipse because it begins before Moon rise. Alaskans will see moonrise during totality but bright evening twilight will make it difficult to view the event.
Citizens of western Europe and northwest Africa will also be able to observe the entire eclipse.

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

I am looking forward to video of the shootdown, if it ever becomes available. SM-3 missiles aboard some of the USN aegis ships were modified recently just for this purpose.

Narrated by Abu Masud:
Allah's Apostle said, "The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of someone's death or life but they are two signs amongst the signs of Allah, so pray whenever you see them."

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

I think it will be around 3:30 or so in Hawaii when they shoot down the satellite.........I would also like to see the video.

A missile has hit an errant spy satellite about 140 miles above Earth, a U.S. official says

Latest news on this

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

I don’t think we would get to see the video of the shootdown, perhaps some computer generated graphics to show how it happened for non-DOD sources.

Here are some pictures of the launch of the missile that shot it down!

Russians are buzzing about those regarding this event.

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

Yeah.

One is that this whole thing about satellite being a danger to mankind and what not was just an excuse for US DOD to be able to show China and Russia that it also has the capability to shoot down satellites and other objects in the space.

China shot down a satellite last year, it was over 500 miles from the earth.

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

Would love to watch that video.

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

You guys are missing the biggest conspiracy theory.

This has nothing to do with China or satellites at all. First, yesterdays intercept was at about 133 miles above earth. Most satellites orbit at 500 miles plus. It is doubtful that the Standard Missile-3, even with an enhanced third booster stage would be effective at those altitudes.

Second, kinetic kills of satellites are messy. The space debris is mostly a menace to US interests, ie the Shuttle, and the ISS. The US has quiet kill capabilities that include seizing radio control of the satellite and telling it to turn off, de-orbit, or fly away. Additionally a high energy blast, either lasers, electronic spikes, or very soft kinetic kills are preferred to scattering debris that will take 40 year to re-enter the atmosphere.

So here is the real conspiracy theory. Earlier this year an AEGIS sistership payed a three day port call to Haifa Israel. The purpose of the port call was to test “integration capabilities”. What does that mean? Well, with a couple AEGIS boats patrolling the Israeli shore line, it would give Israel three separate layered defenses against Iranian missiles. The Aegis provides BMD, the Israeli Arrow provides slightly less capability over a shorter range, and the Patriot system provides terminal protection.

The shore call from the San Jacinco was basically to test the ability to integrate Command and Control capability with the Israelis.

So my conclusion is that this has nothing to do with China or satellites at all. This was a high visibility demonstration for Iran to let them know that Ballistic Missile Defense is operational, reliable, flexible and effective. It is also a public relations coup for the military who is trying to place similar missiles in Eastern Europe, and a big FU to the Russians who are trying to keep the BMD out of their back yard.

Feb 4, 2008 0:21 | Updated Feb 4, 2008 4:22 US anti-missile ship to dock in Haifa

                          By [EMAIL="[email protected]"] YAAKOV KATZ

An American missile ship set to dock at Haifa Port on Monday is equipped with an anti-missile defense system that could be deployed in the region in the event of an Iranian missile attack against Israel.

The *USS San Jacinto *is an AEGIS cruiser in the Ticonderoga Class and was commissioned in 1988. It carries the most advanced underwater surveillance system available today and is equipped with the AEGIS missile defense system, which was developed by Lockheed Martin to protect against aircraft and missiles. The ship will remain in Haifa for three days.

While the IDF developed and operates the Arrow missile defense system, defense officials said Israel has expressed interest in the AEGIS and that last year, the Defense Ministry requested information on the system from the Pentagon. During the first Gulf War in 1991, the US deployed Patriot missile batteries in Israel to defend the country against Iraqi Scud missiles.
“It is possible that one day, if we are under attack, the US will send these ships to the region to help defend us,” a defense official said. “Until then, it is important that we get to know the system, its capabilities and its interoperability with our systems.”
The *San Jacinto *can launch long-range surface-to-surface Tomahawk cruise missiles, rocket torpedoes and standard surface-to-air missiles. The heart of the AEGIS system is the SPY-1A radar system, which is capable of detecting and tracking any aircraft or missile flying within 320 kilometers. The ship has participated in operations in Iraq and Bosnia.

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

Here’s the video.

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

Why would USA need to prove to China and Russia that it can shoot down satellites?

I thought they already knew

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

That is just one of the conspiracy theories out there right now.

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

Actually they have defended this claim, thus its not a conspiracy theory anymore.

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

proof?

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

Listen to your next newscast about it. Especially global since you're in Toronto. They were mentioning that the success of the mission meant that it was capable enough to achieve what China had achieved.

Re: US to shoot down Failed satellite 10:30 ET tonight.

what china achieved ? :hehe:

china is atleast 40 years behind USA in terms of military technology
