Re: US seeks Pakistani, Saudi support for talks with Taliban
Let me assure you, President Obama is a far more intelligent man than Pentagon has grown used to. But he most definately does NOT listen to President Zardari or PM Gilani. What he does listen to is the hissing and anger of American Public and expansive loss of American troops, dwindling support for and in turn lower approval ratings, threats of more casualties, a hampering economy while China grows stronger, and last but not least the continued expansion of Taliban all around Kabul. It is as if "Green Zone" was being encircled, and Rescue Choppers might not be able to land. There is again, Pakistan to rescue American troops just as Pakistanis did in Mogadishu. (It is important to mention that because Pakistan has been a far better ally to US, than US has been to Pakistan.)
Anyhow, the crusade of Afghanistan no longer makes any viable sense both globally or economically. It kinda defeats the purpose of getting access to Central Asia, if by the time US enables itself to tap into Central Asia, it's broke to the pocket-lining and has to take out loans from China to luxurize itself with Central Asian resources, which will then incur tariff by Russia/China, and quite possibly Iran and Afghanistan. What a pityful plan!
Withdrawal from Afghanistan, which again proves itself to be uncontrollable territory, has been on a table for a while now. ISI chief's meeting with Saudi King is a tell-tale sign of a face-saving measure taking place to ensure American can leave Afghanistan with a "Mission Accomplished" banner hanging off the back of the departing HumVees (No pun intended).
However, I do not believe Americans will be able to withdraw in a civil manner or w/out being bled first. The reason for that is because US+NATO bit off more than they could chew. Certain promises were made going into Iraq and Afghanistan to "rebuild" the nations. Iraqis may have cut their losses, and let Americans leave, but if history teaches us anything. It is that Afghanistan will be a nightmare getting out of, as much as it was getting into. America will probably leave behind more than Machinery and Ammo (recall Russia), and will have to initiate rebuilding measures, and then plead for "Is this enough, Master Omar?"
And no, I am not being sarcastic. Read your history books, you'll understand the distasteful satire.
