US seeks bases in Balochistan

In the other thread we were talking about the diplomatic mission that the Americans want to establish in Quetta, some reports are coming out that they want bases in Balochistan so that they could keep an eye on Afghan Taleban based there. It seems that the policy of our military bowing down to each and every demand of the Americans is finally yielding results.

**Eavesdropping on Iran: ‘US pressing for listening posts in Balochistan’
**
**ISLAMABAD: ****Everyone wants to have a hand to play in Balochistan.

The latest player to unmask itself is the United States. Even as tensions brew between Pakistan and the US over a resolution introduced in the US House of Representatives seeking sovereignty for the volatile province, officials reveal that the US has been pushing Islamabad for permission to establish bases in Balochistan for intelligence operations against bordering Iran.
**
“Like always, things are not what they look like, and how they unfold … lies at the heart of all (this). The outburst in America for Balochistan is part of an ambition to set up intelligence bases close to the Iranian border,” an official told The Express Tribune on Sunday, indicating that the Congressional hearing and proposed resolution were playing their part as pressure tactics.

“They (Americans) want to use our soil against Iran, which we can never allow,” said the official, who did not want to be named.

Three officials, two from the security agencies and one from diplomatic circles, confirmed to The Express Tribune that American diplomats and military leaders have been requesting permission for their agents to operate near the Iranian border in Balochistan.

**The revelation came days after a bill was moved in the House of Representatives, blaming Pakistani security agencies for forceful disappearances and extra-judicial killings in Balochistan and calling for the liberation of the country’s largest province. It also follows the visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Pakistan for a trilateral summit.
**
**Officials said that ostensibly, US authorities were seeking Pakistan’s permission to establish bases in Balochistan, claiming to counter the activities of the Afghan Taliban, whom they blame for operating out of the provincial capital under the umbrella of the so-called Quetta Shura. Islamabad, however, denies the presence of any such Taliban shura or council.
**
The proposed resolution adds to the rising chorus of voices across the country pointing fingers over the troubles of the violence-ridden province, including the Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) which has vowed to introduce a resolution in the National Assembly, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and even the Pakistan Bar Council among others.

The international front
**
Running parallel to the Balochistan saga is the recent rising concern in the West over purported Iranian ambitions to build nuclear arsenal. Reports in the recent past suggest American and Israeli authorities are starting to run out of patience, and the threat of Israeli military action against defiant Iran is a growing one.

Just last week, President Ahmadinejad reportedly urged Pakistani authorities to disallow Americans from reinforcing their presence at a consulate in Quetta.

**Trilateral summit statement
**
Earlier last week, a joint declaration was issued at the conclusion of the Pakistan-Iran-Afghanistan summit in Islamabad, where all three sides vowed to put up collective resistance to any new misadventure by any force in the region.

Experts say the statement was a veiled reference to American ambitions to put an end to Iran’s nuclear drive.

In December last year, President Asif Ali Zardari delivered a speech at a gathering of Pakistan Peoples Party workers, saying he would never allow his country to become part of any other war theatre in the region.

“We are the well wishers of all and don’t want to make any more enemies,” the president said in remarks that officials interpreted as a snub to American pressure seeking permission for anti-Iran intelligence operations.

Re: US seeks bases in Balochistan

We always knew what they meant by ‘consulate’ :hmmm:

Re: US seeks bases in Balochistan

"Doesn’t it all make sense now? First, the US took off with accusations that the so called “Quetta Shura” poses threat to the US interest. Then they, out of the blues, became a well wisher of Balochistan saying, “we would have a consulate in Quetta to promote education and development”. When things didn’t work out well for them, they now resorted to a pathetic strategy of an independent state.
Hell no, it ain’t happening. I am from Balochistan and would not approve of such a move. The US wants presence in Balochistan to keep an eye on Iran. For that they will do whatever it takes to push Pakistan to allow them in Balochistan.
My request to all Baloch, Pashtun, Hazara, Punjabi, Muhajir, Hindu, Sikh, Christians and whoever live there is, “please do not fall for the US’s words. The US will bury you alive once they’re done with their mission”. We do not want the US as our friend or enemy for that matter. Like my late mother used to say, “enmity or friendship of police, lawyers and doctors must be avoided”.

fully agree with this Baloch guy, who wrote this comment under the Balochistan article.

Looks like americans can get away with anything.

Re: US seeks bases in Balochistan

Here's the issue in a nutshell, and what I believe to be the "rub" within the fold if you will:

USA **WILL **do whatever it feels is necessary for its' supremacy, and continued supply of natural gas, oil, etc. We've all known for some time now that the previous Afghan Govt. representatives were in USA for talks on a possible gas route from Central Asia to European and U.S. markets. But that arrangement hit a snag, which then led to "liberation" which is still ongoing. Since the resistance has not been diminshed in Afghanistan, the next best option for USA is to create a corridor from Balochistan. Having a compliant Govt. in place only makes that uphill task that much easier.

The solution to this quagmire is also one that does not require supreme intellect, just some use of everyday, readily available, free to all, common sense. Which ironically GOP seems to be low on, much like supply of other everyday commodities to the General Public. If the GOP draws a red line, and drive the point home that ANYONE attempting to create trouble in Balochistan will be dealt with, as one would deal with as if invasion of Sovereignty, and the recipients believe that GOP means it, the Balochistan issue will be left to be dealt with domestically. But can GOP find that nerve of steel required to convey that message, draw the red line, and be ready to enforce it?

Secondly, numerous studies have proven that the ratio of Militants killed vs. Civilian martyred is unfeasible, and only fuels the fire further. It gives rise to low morale among general public, provides more reasons for those who wish to create a rift in the society, and aids the militants in recruiting and misguiding cannon fodder in the name of whatever it is that they use to justify infrastructure damage, and other criminal activities. This problem too is solvable by calling an all-out, no conditions, halt to drone attacks. Hot Pursuit cannot be one-way. PAF should also follow the same policies and engage in hot pursuit of miscreants that slip back into Afghanistan and hit them, even if they happen to be within a yard of ISAF camps. Why not? Forgetting Salala? What's good for the goose....and you know the rest.

GOP also has to simultaneously, (and i say this with much apprehension because God Forbid, the GOP should tackle multiple issues at once and solve them), address the grievances of Balochistan residents including the rebels who just happen to be disgruntled youth from among the public. These disgruntled youths are the new Balochistan face of Pakistan. They have to be brought to table, with sincerity, and the will to implement whatever agreements are reached during the course of discussion.

If you give your foe ammunition, leave it unattended, and infact flag it as ready to exploit, you bet they WILL exploit it. It's about time GOP does something significantly beneficial for Pakistan as a whole, and maybe, just maybe Pakistani public will find reason to praise the current Govt. Army needs to adopt a softer stance, and work with the population to address issues. Set up coordinating officers tasked with collecting information and asking for resources required to adequately address the issues.

Balochistan is one of Pakistan's richest provinces in terms of resources. It's only fair that the province gets its due share. The nation as a whole can only thrive when all of its' units have unity, will to maintain faith in the union, and the upcoming generations find reasons to work for the state because it's their country at stake. They must be made to feel that sense of ownership.

Just my .02.

Re: US seeks bases in Balochistan

Straight away tell Americans, they have lost in Afghanistan and now after killing millions of Afghanies in the name of WOT, it is time to leave the region, there are new realities which the should look into, sinking American Euro Economies cannot be helped with with more confrontation on the global level, the new sanctions on Iranian Oil supply to Euro from June and Iranian reaction to the same have already increase the troubles and risk factors in the global scale.. the best bet for Americans would be, leave the region and just get out of here if they want money, Gulf states Such as Saudi, Kuwait & Qatar can give them billions... Playing with Balochistan is going to create new global war zones, where China, Russia, Iran may not like American presence in the region hence more troubles for Pakistan because, after all, American are foreigners in the region and China, Iran, Russia and India are our neighbors and they are not going anywhere any time soon...

Let see what our Bahadur Afwaaj can do about it, can Pasha and Kiyani can say no to Americans and for once do something good for region?

Re: US seeks bases in Balochistan

They've adopted the mantra of "GOP has to tell us what to do"...they've put the onus on the Govt.

Can the Govt tackle this?

Re: US seeks bases in Balochistan

^^ Let see, How GoP respond to this, does they come back strong on it or they'll go with the Mushy's approach, offer them everything in return of personal favors...but offering/allowing them bases in Balochistan will spark another controversy in the region...

Re: US seeks bases in Balochistan

they are very good at making enemies
