US rule blossoms in Afghanistan.

Now that Shariah rule is over in Mullah Omar’s former southern stronghold, it is not only televisions, kites and razors which have begun to emerge.

Visible again, too, are men with their ashna, or beloveds: young boys they have groomed for sex.

Before the Taleban arrived in 1994, the streets were filled with teenagers and their sugar daddies, flaunting their relationship.

Locals tell you that birds fly over the city using only one wing, the other covering their posterior. The rape of young boys by warlords was one of the key factors in Mullah Omar mobilising the Taleban.

In the summer of 1994, a few months before the Taleban took control of the city, two commanders confronted each other over a young boy whom they both wanted to sodomise.

In the ensuing fight civilians were killed. Omar’s group freed the boy and appeals began flooding in for Omar to help in other disputes.

By November, Omar and his Taleban were Kandahar’s new rulers. Mullah Omar immediately suppressed homosexuality.

Men accused of sodomy faced the punishment of having a wall toppled on to them, usually resulting in death (according to Shariah). In February 1998 three men sentenced to death for sodomy in Kandahar were taken to the base of a huge mud and brick wall, which was pushed over by tank. Two of them died, but one managed to survive.

«When the Taleban came, they were very strict about the ban. Of course, it still happened — the Taleban could not enter every house — but one could not see it». But for the first time since the Taleban took positions in the mountains, one can see the pairs returning. There appears to be no shame or furtiveness about them, although when approached, they refuse to talk to a western journalist.

«They are just emerging again», Torjan said. «The fighters (Afghan-US alliance) too now have the boys in their barracks. This was brought to the attention of Gul Agha, who ordered the boys to be expelled, but it continues. The boys live with the fighters very openly. In a short time, and certainly within a year, it will be like pre-Taleban: they will be everywhere».

«When a man sees a boy he likes — the age they like is 15 or 16 — they will approach him in the street and start talking to him, offering him tea», said Muhammad Shah, a shop owner. «Sometimes they go looking in the football stadium, or in the cinema (which has yet to reopen)».

«He then starts to give him presents, hashish, or a watch, a ring, or even a motorbike. One of the most valued presents is a fighting pigeon, which can be worth up to 0 (£277). These boys are nearly always innocent, but such is the poverty here, they cannot refuse».

Once the boy falls into the man’s clutches — nearly always men with a wife and family — he is marked for life, although the Kandaharis accept these relationships as part of their culture.

When driven around, ashna sit in the front passenger seat. The back seat is simply for his friends. Even the parents of the boys know in their hearts the nature of the relationship, but will tell people that their son is working for the man. They, like everyone else, will know this is a lie. «They say birds flew with both wings with the Taleban», Muhammad said. «But not any more».

Your title makes it sound as if U.S. supports this kind of behavior, you blame these actions on the U.S. as well?

Do you want the Taliban back so they can Rape the women and kill those who disobey the slightest rule?

well said.

Not only this, but most of these English Writing/speaking Talibans live in West (Europe, USA) instead of Saudi Arabia, Iran and Afghanistan. In fact they have never lived in Afghainstan.

"As far as i dont watch porn."

July 13th 2001 The Talibian Banned The ENTIRE use of the Internet.

The reasons were so that children and young people dont watch porn and to save the society from evil. the Taliban minister Mutawakil was in favour of the (internet- porn)= pornfree internet but that was impossible as all the lines were through Pakistan over which they had no control. True it was banned for that very purpose.

What do u think can americans stop or lets say prevent this open rape of boys.

Why do you expect Americans to stop it? It is "Pashtun culture", not "US rule". C'mon, we can't blame America for everything. US didn't even exist when this became part of Pashtun customs. Some quotes you neglected to include:

"Kandahar's Pashtuns have been notorious for their homosexuality for centuries, particularly their fondness for naïve young boys."

"This Pashtun tradition is even reflected in Pashtun poetry, odes written to the beauty and complexion of an ashna, but it is usually a terrible fate for the boys concerned. It is practiced at all levels of Pashtun society, but for the poorer men, having an ashna can raise his status."

First of all let me clear things up.

This ashna thing is with affluent people like the corrupt warlords and seniors.Thats the very same reason the evil Taliban banned this practice with strict punishments otherwise if it had been a part of their culture the Taliban and Mullah Omar would have practiced it more freely rather than sentencing child rapers to death. An average pashtun doesnt practice this. In my family ive never heard anyone doing this evil practice. But this evil is there.

This practice was rigidly stopped when the Sharia was passed. Now under the American control, the americans have liberated the afghans from war, hunger, rape of women, the medressa teachiings and ofcourse the ashnas.

removing of hejab and burqa which are part of culture were the first thing on the minds of Bush's wife, but unfortunatly the child rape is not such an important issue over here
coz it is a part of our culture.

The US cannot stop the culture of boy/man love in Afghanistan any more than it can stop the traditon of tribal warfare. Sure the Taleban could, but they also stomped on every imaginable human right in the process. According to Amnesty International:

*The Taleban were responsible for numerous and widespread human rights abuses, especially against women. The Taleban has reportedly committed political and other extra-judicial executions that include targeted and mass killings, summary executions, and torture and death in custody. Freedom of religion is restricted severely and a controversial, rigid form of Islamic law imposed. Taleban Shari’a courts and religious police apply procedures that fall short of international fair standards and that impose cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment, such as public executions for adultery or murder, amputations for theft, and beatings for lesser infractions. Thousands of people are reportedly held without charge or trial, including members of ethnic minority groups held on suspicion of supporting the anti-Taleban alliance.

The Taleban’s severe restrictions on women’s rights constitute a policy of “gender apartheid” unlike anywhere in the world; their policies deny many of the most basic and fundamental rights. Women are effectively denied education, employment, medical treatment, and freedom of movement. They are obligated to wear an all-enveloping “burqa” robe, to block their windows to prevent being seen from the street, and to be accompanied by a male relative if they appear in public. Those women deemed to have disobeyed the regime’s rules, enforced by the Ministry of Preventing Vice and Fostering Virtue, are subject to severe beating, amputation, and even death by stoning, depending on the alleged offense. Women suffer extreme repression and effectively live under house arrest. Many are widows and unable to care for their children. Severe depression and desperation is rampant. *

The Shari'a law in the west is considered as a rigid anti womens right evil custom. Sharia onnthe whole provide security for women, You should know what used to happen to them in Kabul when the NA used to rule over. The very motives of Taliban were to stop the rapes and killings, the peadophilia and iilegal road taxes. Yet the very same Westerners who call these laws womens rights violaters cant even protect their self respect. I was glad to see Afghan women on TV who said: I dont understand why these Western women are so much critical to our Burqas and limited movement with Mahrams. These women who cant even have their understandinig and who cant provide security to their husbands (referring to Clinton- MOnica affair and millions other who are involved in this sort of acts) and who dont know what their husbands do with other women which is their basic right, have no right to call for our freedoms when they themselves our unsecure and their rights are violated.

ethnic minorities in the North themselves claimed that only God knew what happened when the NA was in power before the Taliban, but now i can be assured that my women will not be raped under the Taliban.

The mass killings which people refer to were Hazara fighters of NA who betrayed (first accepting them in cities and ambushed the taliban when they captured the Northern areas) in the ensue fighting many NA soldiers were killed later claiming to be victims of genocide.

Afganistan is a large jigsaw puzzle, with over a thousand pieces to understand. The US State Dept. must be working overtime. I have read recently that Sufism is being reintroduced into the country with the backing of the US Government. This is to offset militant Islam, but do we have the right to influence their society in this way? Afgans should not have to deal with external interests mucking about with their religion. Hands off Afganistan's internal affairs, man.

Tomasso if only the likes of u were present in the Amewrican administration, things would come out differently. Trough understanding as to why and for what reason things are with culture should be studied. I would be more sorry for the afghans if this jigsaw puzzle becomes even more complex. america has taken responsiblity for nation building, but if it has also taken the responsiblity for culture building i am afraid things would turn out differently as wished. I only hope for the betterment of the people Afghanisitan.

I never thought Amnesty would look out at the world through selectively tinted glass.
But nothing really surprises me anymore.
