US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

WASHINGTON: The United States has cut funding to a popular Pakistani version of the children’s program “Sesame Street” amid allegations of fraud and abuse, a US official said Tuesday.

The program, run under the umbrella of the US-based Sesame Workshop by a local theater group, had been awarded some $20 million in funds from the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Known as “Sim Sim Hamara” it included some of the furry puppets beloved by children in the West such as Elmo as well as local characters including Baily, a fluffy donkey who wants to be a pop star, and a crocodile, Haseen-o-Jameel, who loves words, rhymes, and songs.

But through an anti-fraud hotline set up by the US, Washington received “what we believe were credible allegations of fraud and abuse by the Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop, which manages the ‘Sesame Street’ program in Pakistan,” a State Department spokesman, Mark Toner, said.

An investigation had been launched into the allegations and Rafi Peer had been sent “a letter that terminates the project agreement,” he added.

Toner refused to go into the nature of the allegations against the project, which he said had already spent some $6.7 million of its funds. “We do acknowledge the program is beneficial. But, we had what we believe were credible allegations. So rather than to continue to throw good money after bad, we thought it was prudent to cut off this program and wait for the results of the investigation,” he told journalists.

Sesame Workshop said in a statement that it was “surprised and dismayed to learn about the serious allegations made against Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop.” It added that it was awaiting the outcome of the investigation and did “not know the specific details of these allegations.” “It is our hope that the achievements of Sim Sim Hamara, and the gains we have made in the lives of children in Pakistan, will carry on.”

But Faizaan Peerzada, head of the Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop, told AFP he had been informed the program was ending due to lack of funds and said it was only through media reports that he discovered allegations of fraud and abuse.

“We have been in the field for the last 35 years. We totally deny the allegations,” he told AFP by telephone from Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore. “We have not been shown any evidence or proof to support the allegations,” he added.

One audit report had been approved and the second was due in July, he said. “We were suddenly told that they were ending it as they do not have additional funds.” It was the second time that a foreign version of “Sesame Street” has run into trouble after earlier problems with a Palestinian program.

“Let me be very clear that we strongly support the goal of… ‘Sesame Street’ and the Sesame Workshop worldwide,” Toner said. “These are valuable programs, teaching kids worldwide values as well as math, reading skills, et cetera.”

Ab dekhna aur kitne plug nikaalay jaeinge.

If you don't listen, then Uncle Sam gets angry. And the whole world knows what happens when Uncle Sam is angry.

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

Usman Peerzada was on PTV morning show with Juggun talking about this issue this morning.

He denied all allegations and thought that it might be some disgruntled employee who was fired from his job who made the allegations,
and that the investigation has not started yet.

Also that most aid to Pakistan is being cut these days and that the show will continue with or without the aid.

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

Great news if they've decided to abandon this "plan". We don't need any more American influence in Pakistan. Besharam Pak government sold the izzat of the entire nation.

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani ‘Sesame Street’ !

Yup, Elmo is gonna corrupt all of Pakistan.

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

yeah.....let's just see the obligatory bad in anything that comes from the "wicked west"..........cut off our noses despite our faces.

let's not wait for any investigation to prove anything.

and let's just say that in the midst of all the corruption that breeds in our country this was the singular project that was being run without any fraud and that Uncle Sam is angry so Uncle Sam is taking away his money......

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

Waat?? Corruption in Pakistan??? No waaay!!

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

^ my point exactly...

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

Why is it that so many things in Pakistan is sponsored by USA? can't we do these things on our own?

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

I don't think anyone is denying the fact that there is a lot of corruption in Pakistan.

Having said that, the fact that these allegations and accusations come after America losing it's so called patience with Pakistan, makes this story fishy.
In fact I believe nothing that comes from uncle Sam's dirty mouth.

As for the investigation to prove anything. That will be very reliable and trustworthy yeah.

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

so as far as you are concerned forget any proof required.....you're already declared the verdict.....
by not giving a chance to the investigation aren't you proving my point?

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

if this does prove to be true, then that would be a *very, very *sorry case and another dhaba on our country's already marred face

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

this could have been real good. paratha monster om nom nommmmmmm

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

No I am not proving your point.

I never said that I am against investigation.

I said that amreeki investigation will be very reliable (sarcasm mode).

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

and you would be more inclined to believe in the Pakistani investigation?

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani ‘Sesame Street’ !

I did not say that either.

But now that you mentioned it. why not :k:

Re: US pulls plug on Pakistani 'Sesame Street' !

InshaAllah they will find new sponsors soon!
