Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
I feel its a good deal for India anyways.
As said, Indians to pack this deal are not looking for a short term for a year or so.
Basically we have our vision heading towards a healthy economy. Look at the helicopter view, where exactly India as a country is headign towards.
Forget about the numbers, to substantiate a particular target.
The uranium, even if 80% is used in high uranium enrichment. The rest uranium with a lesser radioactive, density. Can be used for other applications such as military, power electricity.
No doubt for the US , India is inevitably indispensable.
This can be thougt out as a strategic deal, if we look at macro economic events. Heading towards the future. Not to forget off shore business, is booming in India.
Even if I suppose India is currently using 3% of uranium available for its needs. There is no harm in building up the inventory, infact to tell you this helps the GDP of India.
Thinking about it for a long term vision, for emerging economies such as India, if they have to bring in more of Vitamin M, thats FDI.
For that infrastructure growth has to be stupendous, with these deals, you first provide the supply and the demand comes in automatically.
Provide MNCs for eg Electricity the hindrance for manufacturing companies, to come over to India is no more then a thin line.
Manufacturing is one industry, which is not exposed completely.
For the US, China is a major threat now, they have to diversify or look for better options and the young Indian guns are sure to fire.
Forget about some billion dollars.
Look at it for a longer term.
1) Increase your FOREX kitty, during the time of shocks or ripples to the economy a cushioning capacity is supported.
2) More FDI, towards manufacturing.
More to list, but thats enough.
Overall there are only 10-15 countries,(supply and demand remember that) listed so India sure shot for a longer term, India is comtemplating towards a better future to cater the growing demand.
Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
Shadup, do your homework instead of blabbering… China has already build one nuclear reactor for Pakistan, second started recentely and negotiations are on the way for more…

Musharraf, who arrived in Beijing on Sunday for a five-day visit, is also seeking Chinese help in developing nuclear energy.
China helped its traditional friend set up the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Phase I; and building on the 300-megawatt Phase II started recently.

But behind the scenes, India and Indian-Americans worked with the
administration and key Congressmen to accommodate all shades of opinion
on Capitol Hill into the bills in the Senate and the House.
** It was necessary to quickly complete implementing the nuclear deal
before the Chinese moved more pieces on the diplomatic chessboard in
favour of Pakistan. **
Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
Mere Indian friends
This deal won’t magically lead to an increase in India’s use of nuclear energy, not now, not in a very long time. Nuclear-generated electricity accounts for 3 percent of India’s energy consumption. If the plans for India’s Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) go along as planned—they will fall far short of their projections—then, by 2025, nuclear energy will account for, at most, 8-10 percent of India’s energy consumption. Whether we’re talking about India, the US, or other states—nuclear energy is not going to substitute for oil and other fossil fuel consumption any time soon. So, to say you are trying to 'advance' is a very lame excuse.
If India wants to improve its energy resources, they need to acquire load of coal or natural gas peakers that are more economical choice; also to moderinize its electrical grid and minimize rampant grid theft.
Also, what do you think of IAEA? An independent, strong, un-influenced organiztion? Check the latest news, U.S is concerned about the safe guards, expect them to pressure India more on this deal.
Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
India has sold its nuclear soul to the US
April 27, 2006
The US waiver bill to give effect to the nuclear deal with India shows just how wide the gap is between what America promises and what it sets out to do.
Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
Well actually Pakistan first said that it deserves the same deal. When it did not get one, its PM said that this deal is “dangerous for the NPT”. When the US did not relent, again Pakistani spokesperson has said that Pakistan also wants a similar deal.
I mean like if this deal is so bad, then why does Pakistan also want it ?
I agree that by 2020, only 8-10 % of India’s energy supply will be by nuclear means, but the foundation for that must be made right now because :-
It takes 6-7 years to construct one nuclear reactor.
Negotiations for the supply of uranium from the NSG do not happen in days or weeks. It takes deals like this one to do so.
India proposed this deal in 2003. An agreement was signed in July 2005 for agreeing to discuss this. When Bush came in 2006, the deal was signed. Now it has to be passed in Congress. Then each NSG member has to be convinced to pass it in the NSG.
All this will take upto 2007. Supply of the fuel will begin only by 2007. Supply of any technology will probably begin much later.
The only disadvantage of this deal is that India does not get official recognition as a nuclear-weapon state, like the one China got when it signed the NPT in 1992 or the PNC agreement it signed with the US a few years prior to that.
Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
Pakistan is in South Asia and any nuclear deal is going to affect the politics of that region. When you bring United States in a region that is polorized and nuclear armed, you'll see many different calls and reactions.
Like most developing countires, India will eventually have problems mobilising political and maintaining consistency with this project, even if it is 8-10% for 2020. Only during the time of crisis deals are made and most of them compromises national identity. How about we forget the future 8-10% and talk about right now and the rest of India. Majority of the problem lies there and if Indian government wants to slove it, they need improve that part of the world. Singing this deals does not help, nor it decreases the energy crisis facing India.
If the government of India is really committed in resovling this issue, they need to take several small steps like make all major cities that are close to gas transmission grid switch from oil to CNG. Have some resource-based energy startegy, also move the economy gradually from oil to gas. Moreover, there is no national strategy from the Indian government that puts an average Indian a part of this crisis. Indian government must insist its citizen that this crisis has a lot to do what average Indian does in the country, if you make them a part of it you'll have volunteers and inventors that'll bring ideas to the table.
This nuclear deal with the United States is not going to help India, not in short-time and its a big hope long-term wise. They should have kept the $36 billion in their pocket and invested in their insfrastructure and on science.
Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
We need resources, where do we get the gas from. Even when water rich state like kerala suffers from frequent current cuts and load shedding, baren nuclear powered chennai(Madras) have no current cuts or load shedding. Industries are flocking up there. Even if there are 8 or 10 nuclear reactors being commisioned in next 10 years it will go a long way in solving some of the power situation in the big cities.

India is converting to CNG very rapidly. Even in Pakistan, its an Indian company Everest Kanto cylinders that controls more than half of the market.

Yeah India has begun to move towards wind energy also.
Asia's largest wind-park is in India at Vankusawade. It generates 201 MW of power. In many other parts of India such parks have been set-up.

Well actually there is a shorfall of energy, so India is trying all means to get power like Nuclear, CNG, wind-energy, investing in oil blocks abroad and so on.
Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
I have given reasons why this is a terrible deal for India and how they have sold their souls to Americans, but yet to see a valid argument from the other side.
How about this for statisfaction.
India’s top nuclear scientist prefers NPT to Indo-US N-deal
*“NPT may be discriminatory, but we will still be allowed to exit whereas in the current Indo-US deal which is under negotiation, India will remain bound in perpetuity,” *Mr Sethna said while delivering a keynote address at the Forum of Integrated National Security here last evening.
“India is supposed to get only uranium for its nuclear programme to expand. Simply for this, so much compromising… is uncalled for,”
http://www.navhindtimes.com/articles.php?Story_ID=070348
Keep living the wishful thinking dreams of No, America loves me, they can’t do this to meee!!!
Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
Yeah I read that report in yesterday's news. Now those are Dr. Homi Sethna's views, while others like Narayanan and the current head of India's Department of Atomic Energy, Dr. Anil Kakodkar support the deal.
Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
I am not sure how much India will gain from the deal, but I am convinced it will.
From your account Pakistans soul is surely for sale.

India, IAEA begin talks on safeguards agreement
NEW DELHI, July 8: India held talks on Saturday with the UN’s nuclear watchdog to help clinch an accord which would see New Delhi place under safeguards a ** majority ** of its atomic plants, an Indian official said.
Re: US panel backs India nuclear deal
Well actually 14 reactors out of 22 will placed under safeguards and that is known ever since February when the deal was signed and made public. That news article is making it sound as though the deal is not in India’s favour, by hiding actual numerical facts.
