I am not truly convinced the US is in for the long run with Pakistan. So this long wish list is a start for our own security. However what I find extremely disheartening is the lack of economic issues to be discussed.
No PTA, no economic development support. Social support, health care support and the rest. Seriously that is more important these days than freaking Chinooks.

Yeah. Good point.
Prez Obama should start a separate TARP-2 (Troubled Assets RESCUE plan) specific to Pakistan.
As opposed to $700+ billion for TARP-1, we'll be OK if TARP-2 goes for $100 billion.
And Americans can reap really really long term benefits,
And in the same vein,
We can $hut the Islamists up in Pak.
The reason TARP-2 is needed, because in Pak we do not believe in using tourism to improve our cash flow, like those darned Chinese, Indians, Singaporans, and S. koreans do.
We don't want to work hard in manufacturing either,
We don't need any form of TARP or Crap or whatever it is. What we need is market access, TOT and supporting the GOPs moves set up infant industries with financial support. But the most important of all of this is enhanced Market Access. a PTA is an absolute minimum.

PTA is good. For true development (instead of relying on handouts such Kerry-Lugar or TARP-2), we have to work on TOT.
Market access is part government driven, but largely people driven.
If the presidents/top managers of big US corporations feel safe and welcomed in Pakistani cities, they will come by the droves, like they do in China, India, Taiwan, Singapore, and S. Korea.

lol.. same as usual.. kept crying from last 60+ years now.. we need market access.. we need maket access.. .. what the heck....
accept it.. we are one of the laziest nation in the world.. and what we made for export except textile & agriculture products?
but we do have colonies.... of terrorists to export around the world.. !
Pakistan needs a tarp-2 seriously that's the only solution for us.. and this tarp-2 should come every year... because we need it. .every year..
^ read 1960s history. Pakistan still has good surgical instruments industry. Too bad due to political situation/security issues Pakistan has seen brain-drain which has had huge impact. Pakistan can still develop into a modern country, problem lies in geopolitical stability, lawless-ness within country.
^ that good surgical industry was oki for 60's .. it's been 50 years now bahi sahab..
accept it we are well behind in everything the problem is not just geo-political location or no leaders. .the problem is more deep rooted.. and it's started with religion, the mentality, the insecurity. Now let me give you a figure.. which will definitely blow your mind away...
export of Saudia to India is around 14% and import is 9% .. and same goes towards UAE, Iran, Kuwait, Egypt, Turkey, Malaysia.... ..and else..
while Pakistan is not even close to 1%.. in this situation what do you expect? don't we have a better rhetoric then crying about 7 ocean away country... access to markets?

I am not referring to 60s for surgical industry but overall industrialization. Geopolitical situation changed in 70s and thanks to our beloved Zia the religion/fanatical indoctrination began and all we knew was jhd jhd. That indoctrination/inclination didn't exist at that level in 50s, 60s or even 70s.

Yeah you are the person one should listen to regarding Pakistan’s economic development. Someone who has never set foot in Pakistan and on top of that doesn’t even realize that the concept of market access is only 10 to 15 years old at best.
oops this didn’t open in USA. Probably this is only for people within Pakistan to let them keep living in utopia !
it’s a good summary, but what? i don’t give a crap about bi-lateral relations with Pakistan .. i am talking about economical factors here, which is definitely going into India’s way !
Just look at the trend in urban slum population percentage at the economist (it says I need 25 posts to post url here so just go to economist dot com and search "slumdog millions"
It says about 46% of urban population in Pakistan lives in slums???!!! even India has moved from about 55% in 1990 to abput 31% in 2007.
If peace is lost economy is lost. Pakistan FDI is almost totally gone too.
yeah, a tarp crap whatever is a must to keep afloat!
It didn't open because it proves you wrong. Btw back up your statistical claims with actual links and sources. I would love to see what else Saudi Exports to India other than oil.
Saudi "industrial" trade is a tiny grain when it comes to global money flow. They are bunch of tribals who happened to drive mercs and jags.
So you put an ape in a merc, he may look sophisticated, but he still is an ape.
Before the defenders of Saudis jump on this thread, they should sit down, down a chill-pill and think!
Saudis have ZEEEEERO contribution to the science, or arts, or global rule. The only couple of things they export are the raw petroleum, and raw-est and raunchiest form of a religion.
This thread was supposed to be about Pak-US trade ties. CM and other had good points. So stick to the topic.
And let Saudis be where they will be forever, in the midst of dirt heaps and camel poop.
