the nuclear deal is more important for the Indians than the gas deal. The former places India on a much different level, at par with the rest of the elite club than the latter. I am not too sure whether India has become member of NSG yet but once it has secured the deal with the US, it will reap a lot of benifits. Now the test is whether it will be able to maintain its independence or not... Given the recent developments in and around Iran, that is highly unlikely and I don't think India will chose to antagonize the US.

But nuclear deal is more imprtant to India in LONG TERM.

However, to fulfil immediate energy requirements of growing economy, this gas deal is like a boon...If we give up this gas deal, it will be dificult for us to secure oil and gas fields in other parts of world due to very high competition from energy hungry China.

I am still of opinion that government can afford to delay the nuclear deal and may go ahead with gas pipeline?? though not sure.

You cannot have your cake and eat it too... You need to read the text of the deal to know what I am talking about.

I have read the text but I guess there is some misunderstanding here. We are essentially making the same point...the difference between 'what ought to be' and 'what is.' The former an IDEAL, the latter a REALITY and the reality is that each will pursue its own interest. Oh well...
