US offers $9bn arms sale to Pakistan

Islamabad, Sep 01 (Online): The United States has offered sale of arms worth nine billion US dollars to Pakistan to help it shore up its defence capability, official sources said today.

They said Pakistan has compiled its arms and spares shopping list after the US made the offer.

A five-day meeting of Pakistan-US Military Consulative Commission has also been called in Washington to discuss the arms deal, the sources were quoted as saying by Pakistan daily The News .

Besides a list of vision devices, missiles and radars, Pakistan’s bid for purchase of 40 F-16 aircraft and upgrading of existing F-16 fleet are also on the agenda of the Washington meeting.

The Pakistan delegation led by Defence Secretary Lt. Gen. Hamid Nawaz (retd) will also discuss arms and equipment purchase for its navy and airforce with their US counterparts.

The two sides would also discuss training opportunities for Pakistani military officials in the US and consider joint military excercises, the report said. The delegation will leave for the US by the end of next week.

US offers $9bn arms sale to Pakistan

$9 billion deal hmmmm intresting, The US is giving multi million pound deal to the Indian army and now doing the same with Pakistan

I see a trap similar to Iraq and Iran in the 70’s and 80’s where the US was supplying weapons to both sides then instigated a massive war between both countries . It this deja vu?

Time to invest in portable, Trident Arrys and some good Air-power... Hope this one comes true..

Where's the $9 billion gonna come from??

Well at a guess its gonna be more IMF/world bank loans which is a weapons of mass destruction for people of pakistan and a complete disaster.

Or it is gonna come from more selling of pakistan utilities to foreign companies for few pennies!

Pakistan should invest more into electricity for its general population then invest more into Arms.

no such deal in the offing, simply a bluff … report denied by Defence ministry.

ISLAMABAD, Sept 4: Pakistan will never indulge in an arms race and it could not spare the amount of $9 billion for defence purchases.

The ministry of defence, in an apparent response to recent media reports suggesting that Pakistan was planning to buy defence systems and equipment worth $9 billion, said in a statement issued here Thursday that $9 billion was a huge sum of money which a country like Pakistan facing multiple issues could not set aside for only defence purchases.

Dawn report

If Pakistan decides to do this they will be indebted to the IMF/US for a very long time. A muslim country should follow the Islamic ways and not borrow on the conditions of "interest"/sood.

^ pakistan is very indebted right now to US and IMF amongs others. What's a few more hindred millions in interest when they can get a a few hundred more armed for insurrection

Tom why all this hate, your country has more in GDP ok... Yep but we all know who's who and What's what!!! Right... So lets try and be normal on these topics.. beside stats have shown that pakistan's fianaces are in order.. thanks to Mushy...

My message would be to stop speaking and get your own house in order before you comment on others problems, if i not mistaken india has huge problems with aids food famin and not to forget that over half the worlds hungary live in india....

We all have problmes the only way to progress is to work together and stop picking up on our pettey differences!!!

Jackal, I'm sorry if I offended you. But the facts are facts. So much of pakistan's resources keep getting used for financing cross border violence. Then they go borrow more. Put yourself in our shoes and tell us how you'll feel.

Be that as it may, I'll try to curtail nastiness creeping into my responses.

I think Paksitan should get the tchnology of making them instead of buying readymade.

Thankyou.. Very civil of you!!!

Why beg for loans? Why not fix Pakistan first. Pakistanis are extremely resourceful people. If only corruption could be curbed, laws implemented equally and education promoted to every Pakistani, we would need loans from nobody. The power of millions of educated people working together far outweighs begging for quick fixes. Everything I have mentioned can be done without much capital. The only thing that is needed is sincere leadership. Pakistani people can do the rest. I am fully confident.

Allah says in Quran(Translation)" AUR HUM TUM HI MAIN SE TUM JAISOON KO HE TUMHARA HUKMARAM BANATAY HAIN"

If we want to have a honest leadership we have to strart from you and I. change the individuals you will change the nation._ Agreed_

Wasn't ti in the news recently that this offer was a part of the deal that Pakistan will send its forces for so called "peace keeping " in Iraq. And the forbidden wepons will thus be sold to pakistan as a part of that deal.

I don't know what happened next.
