Re: US Media... Ignorance par excellence
i wouldnt call it ignorance. if anything the media is doing quite well to add fuel to an already screwed up situation.
just the other day, bbc was insisting that the executioners at the gallows were all shias. how could they claim this when they werent even invited to witness the event. nowadays a car bombing isnt reported as being carried by insurgents but infact by shia/sunni miscreants.
Re: US Media… Ignorance par excellence
The way I understand it, on Saturday Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated only amongst Iraq’s sunnis (based on day after Arafat). The shias of Iraq (including the government) celebrated Eid on Sunday.
The significance of hanging Saddam on Saturday, and for US media to point it out, was that according to Iraqi constitution, no hanging should take place on Eid day, so hanging Saddam on Saturday was a symbol by the shiite Iraqi government that they don’t care about sunnis of Iraq and whether they celebrate Eid on Saturday; rather only shia celebration of Eid on Sunday is important.
Hope it helps.

Re: US Media... Ignorance par excellence
I just wanted to correct what has been misquoted to media bash. There is plenty of bad coverage out there but the thread began by suggesting CNN said Shia dont celebrate Eid.
If anyone was actually listening at least to what Aneesh was reporting and most of CNNs anchors as well, they were stating an important fact: Eid for Sunnis began sunbreak on Saturday, for Shia a day later. Why was that important? Because Saddam is a Sunni and to be killed on the day that Eid begins for Sunnis would - and did - bring outrage from Sunni leaders across the Middle East.
It's easy to jump on things when they are not fully understood. But please someone correct what to me was and is a factual statement. The reason Shia and Sunni were even brought into coverage was because of the differing days when Eid BEGAN. Nobody suggested from what I saw that Eid was for one and not the other.
