Olson: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline

Karachi: United States Ambassador to Pakistan, Richard Olson, said that his country has concerns on Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project.

During his visit to Quaid-i-Azam’s mausoleum, the US ambassador said, “We do have concerns about Iran’s potential development as a nuclear power and that we are not alone in that regard and that this is the strongly held consensus view of the international community.”

He also said that his country was ready to cooperate with Pakistan in the energy sector in order to help Pakistan in overcoming energy shortage.

Zardari cancels Iran gas pipeline talks

President Asif Ali Zardari, unexpectedly cancelled his visit to Tehran at the weekend amid mounting US objections to gas pipeline project with Iran, Financial Times reported
**
Iran has offered Pakistan 250 million dollars to finance the long-delayed gas pipeline projects.** There were indications that Iran would give more if need be. “It’s a feasible project for Pakistan. It’s the quickest route, the cheapest route where we can fulfil our energy needs,” Dr Asim Hussain, Adviser on Oil and Natural Resources to the prime minister said.** Mr.Zardari was due to arrive in Tehran on Friday to finalise the financial assistance agreement.**

Iran has completed the pipeline on its side while Pakistan has yet to take the start.

According to Dr. Asim Hussain,** Pakistan currently needs 8bn cubic feet of gas per day, but is producing only 4.2bn.** Iran can help Pakistan in overcoming its energy crisis.

This pipleline has become an external Kalabagh Dam issue. Anything we need desperately becomes a a bone of contention. If US is really serious about hepling Pakistan overcome its energy crisis, it should first come up with viable alternatives instead of just airing its concerns and pushing our ‘brave and visionary’ leadership from the backgroud.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

^ publicly Zardari never get support for this pipeline, so don't blame him blame the no political maturity which can't let nation to come on an issue together another example was malala attack.

US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

I have no words for this utter low life of a leader pakistan has. Absolutely none.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

Firstly US should be concerned more about its national interests, leave the rest of the world to decide whats good for them.

Secondly, I'd wish that Pakistani politicians developed some spine to take forward our interests and not buckle under US pressure.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

Habibi, has he ever taken the nation or political leadership of the country into confidence over US pressure? He is the head of the nation, if he cannot take decision solely based on country's insterest, than he is clearly not worth of the post he is occupying.

You need a leader for such situations who knows how to stare back, someone who wasn't a babysitter and someone who does not have business compulsions.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

lulz, if he is powerful I wonder how a sitting PM can be fired or memo gate, or warning from ISPR and the language use against him daily on live shows.

Mashallah we have such a powerful president phunny. We just don't a leader but also the opposition & other so-called leaders or tabdeeli k nishaan on the same page.

frankly the whole nation should held accountable for the death of IP pipeline.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

^ Agreed. All powerful Mush couldn't do much on it either. He kept waiting for support from China that never came. Other politicians are mostly quiet.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

Gilani was fired on Memogate? I thought it was on Swiss letter case.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

I'd say the leadership has no imagination. This pipeline is important for our economic survival. The US has nothing to offer, that is better than this. Now it's up to the Pakistani leadership to sell an 'Iran-Pakistan' friendship to the world. We could say we're trying to convince them to give up their nuclear dreams, by offering the incentive of financial co-operation. We could have talks with Iran, where we discuss greater regional co-operation and them toning down their rhetoric on Israel. There has to be a way forward.

But Ah, we wouldn't be in this mess if we had leaders with brains.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

khe khe khe. Don't be so naive when gillani openly went against Army Chief oath statement calling it against the law... That was the time he signed on his death papers.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

Sell it to someone else buddy :)

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

As always, army becomes a convenient and readily available scapegoat for anything and everything. I dont know what else Zardari could have asked for in terms of power and control. He has a friendly COAS, whom he gave an extension beyond his legal powers.

The IP gas line could have been an easy affair, and could have resulted in a huge vote bank for PPP, had they done something about it. As always, PPP went for quick bucks, rather than a long term plan. US offered the govt some petty aid in cash, and they set aside the pipeline project, even though that pipeline project could have resulted in far bigger revenues eventually. After all, Turkey, a very close US ally, also has a gas pipeline coming in from Iran, with another pipeline project on the cards, which will eventually go into Europe.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

If Turkey can do it why can't we?

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

^ Because we are not Turkey!

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

10% of $250million is only $25 million, that is peanuts.

when did public demonstrate against this project to make such claim?

Look who believes in conspiracy theories :hehe:

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

no conspiracy just reality a lot of people never believed on midnight jackal operation or Mehran gate..

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

yes, what you believe in is ‘reality’ and what you don’t is just a conspiracy :hehe: :k:

Ye Amerika kab hamari jaan bakshega YA kab hamare karta dharta baksish Lena khatam karenge(^_^) we awam only in hard time always.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

Actually its our leaders and not amreeka.... There are lot of countries who have given a nice smooth longlong dunda to amreeka and can repeat the process any time. The countries in question are much smaller with far less resources then Pak.

$2B in bribes is lots of money and money talks.

Re: US has concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline: Olson

No leader in his right mind would have risked alienating the country for the sake of Iran. Pakistan cant afford to not have the Americans on their side. Although, at some point, Pakistan will have to look out for her own interest, right now it simply has to dance to the tune of the ones that pull the purse strings. Its the sad truth for Pakistan. If you cant get your house in order, you cant call the shots.
