*Emergency to stay, US told

By Ihtasham ul Haque

ISLAMABAD, Nov 17: President Gen Pervez Musharraf told US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte on Saturday that emergency rule was needed for a peaceful conduct of elections, refusing to set a date for lifting it.

Informed sources said that during a one-hour meeting with the visiting US official, the president also said no political party would be barred from contesting elections and that a level playing field would be provided to everyone.

The president assured Mr Negroponte that free, fair and transparent elections would be held in the first week of January. The president’s spokesman, Maj-Gen (retd) Rashid Qureshi, told Dawn after the meeting that Mr Negroponte had come to Pakistan to understand the fast developing political situation and the president briefed him particularly about the elections, war on terror and the circumstances in which he was ‘constrained’ to promulgate emergency on Nov 3. “The president told the visiting US official that the third phase of transition to complete civilian set-up will be achieved by holding free and fair elections,” he said.

The sources said Gen Musharraf told Mr Negroponte that former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was ‘too confrontationist’ and ruled out any further discussions with her over a proposed ‘power-sharing agreement’. It is not known that what was the response of the US official on this comment. There were speculations that Mr Negroponte would meet Ms Bhutto on Saturday. However, she left Lahore for Karachi in the evening instead of coming to Islamabad.

The president told him that the proclamation of emergency had become ‘necessary’ to fight effectively against terrorists and religious extremists in the country. The sources said Mr Negroponte sought a date for the lifting of emergency, but the president refused to do so. President Musharraf insisted that emergency would ensure a smooth political atmosphere, leading to orderly elections.
He said the step was also aimed at arresting the deteriorating law and order situation as well as containing the influence of terrorists who were now heading towards the settled areas of Pakistan. One of the major objectives of imposing the emergency was to avoid violence and bombings during general elections, he said.

During the meeting, he said, Pakistan-US relations also came up for discussion and that both have similarities of views on various national and international issues. The president also told the US deputy secretary of state that Pakistan government has decided to raise additional 125 platoons of Frontier Constabulary, 7,000 levies and 1,500 policemen to further strengthen war on terror in the NWFP. He said that Pakistan’s security forces were fully capable of carrying out operation in the troubled region. Pakistan, he said, did not need any foreign military support in this behalf.

In the context of fight against terrorism, President Musharraf termed unfair and untrue the allegation that political developments had distracted government in its counter-terrorism efforts. He said Pakistan was fully committed to the war on terror.

The president also briefed his guest about the current situation in tribal areas and Swat. Mr Negroponte lauded the role of President Musharraf in the war against terror and said that the United States would continue its support to Pakistan in this behalf. He appreciated the announcement of the president about the holding of elections in January. Senior US and Pakistani officials were present in the meeting.

Re: US Envoy Voices Support for Musharraf - PAK says Emergency to stay.

Well I hope things work out for the better. However the more pressing problem is "internal" to Pakistan. That is to crush swati fasadis.

It is shameful that some people are trying to use America to whip Pakistan. These half @r$ed protests in the US are simply by those who are supporting terrorists and anarchists in Pakistan.

Re: US Envoy Voices Support for Musharraf - PAK says Emergency to stay.

I hear President Musharaf was treated with kid gloves, whereas BB was treated with boxing gloves by Negroponte?

Re: US Envoy Voices Support for Musharraf - PAK says Emergency to stay.

Yes you are right, only anarchists can protest against emergency. Swat was never a problem until last 10-15 days, fasadis never got in Lal Masjid until July operation, rest of Pakistan is getting full honey and milk flowing. The SC verdict against Musharraf was also going to be fasadi.

Re: US Envoy Voices Support for Musharraf - PAK says Emergency to stay.

That's true to some degree. However it is imperative for Pak politicians to work with President Musharraf instead of creating fasad in the country.

US is asking for the same, and so are the 160 million people of Pakistan, that please BB, please NS, don't fight wars in the streets. Just work with President Musharraf. That's the only way things will improve in Pakistan i.e. by working together and not fighting like pesky dogs.

Re: US Envoy Voices Support for Musharraf - PAK says Emergency to stay.

Absolutely right. No Pakistani wants to see an end to the Unprecedented Economic growth Pakistan has seen in the past eight years under the leadership of President Pervaiz Musharaf. Long may he continue. :k:

Re: US Envoy Voices Support for Musharraf - PAK says Emergency to stay.

Dear oh dear, what is this? Top US envoy praising Musharraf rather than telling him off! :rotfl:

Pakistan First. :jhanda:

Re: US Envoy Voices Support for Musharraf - PAK says Emergency to stay.

What war these people could fight on street? They do not have enough soldiers to do anything on street. Most of their soldiers these days write on forums or chat on net. Some are still enjoying accumulated loot and plunder during their corrupt periods. Thus in desperation, NS and BB are busy hiring all bikao maal, and thus paying media owners, Journalists, and lawyers, to do propaganda for them, and it seems that these people are doing their best to skin them.

US cannot do much about Pakistan: White House

Updated at 0330 PST

RICHMOND: Though U.S. President Bush is urging his Pakistani counterpart to lift emergency rule, there’s not much else that can be done, the White House admitted Monday. White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Bush received a briefing Monday morning from Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, who met with Pakistani President Pervez Musharaff on Saturday. “Remember, in diplomacy, when you have this type of outreach, you can’t expect instant results,” Perino told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Richmond, Va. “Deputy Secretary Negroponte said that he delivered a very clear message, and we’ll have to continue to monitor the situation as it evolves to see what happens next.”

**Perino said the administration was encouraged by Musharraf’s pledge to have elections as scheduled in January. **Asked whether Bush has a time frame in mind for when emergency rule, which was imposed Nov. 3, must be lifted, she responded, "Pakistan is a sovereign country. The president can urge President Musharraf to take a different course. We do not believe that elections can be free and fair if you’re under a situation where the media is not allowed to report on the issues of the day and people aren’t allowed to campaign."

Re: US Envoy Voices Support for Musharraf - PAK says Emergency to stay.

:rotfl: someone please remind me number of phone calls made after which Mushy made U-turns. Yes, Pakistan is sovereign in a way that no “US citizen” is ruling the country… oh wait, does Shaukat Aziz not have US citizenship?

Re: US Envoy Voices Support for Musharraf - PAK says Emergency to stay.

At present both BB and Musharraf are trying to put up their case in front of US. Each claiming
*I can fight a better WOT
*I can better protect nukes.

Re: US Envoy Voices Support for Musharraf - PAK says Emergency to stay.

facebook has also got a support Musharraf group which is losing its membership on a daily basis therefore it is understandable that facebook is not popular amongst Mush supporters. Shame Mush cant close down facebook.
