Out of curiosity I just checked their Facebook pages, and what struck me was the fact that the US Embassy Pakistan Facebook page has nearly 1 million likes whereas the US Embassy India page has less than 200k.
Considering that most opinion polls suggest that Pakistani’s by and large dislike America, I find this particularly odd.
(Heck the US Embassy Bangladesh Facebook page has nearly half a million likes, more than twice as much as the India page)
Muzna, why do you think Facebook likes aren’t an accurate reflection? Facebook has a lot less dummy accounts than twitter so going by that logic, Facebook likes would be more accurate than having twitter followers, for instance.
I do believe that FB Likes are a pretty accurate measure of judging popularity considering that FB’s advertising revenues are driven by that measure in much the same way as a TV programs is measured by its TRP’s.
That aside, this pretty much proves that the average resident Pakistani (who would be interested in the US Embassy’s local FB page, unlike some of the hatred spewing Non Resident Pakistanis) may be an Imran Khan supporter but is also pretty much a US fan.
A lot of people like pages just for the sake of liking. Plus these ‘likers’ don’t all live in Pakistan. What are they compared to the entire Pakistani population?
Just checked tha page, and I see one of my friends has liked the page. Uska waasta US embassy se door tak nai banta, yet this person liked the page.
I wouldn’t call FB likes an accurate measure of popularity. A lot people like pages, so that they can post their hate messages.
Interesting. Here’s a real nice explanation of what you’re referring to. Facebook likes do matter but only when you know what to do with them. In business, basically, your one Facebook fan can generate you anything between $0-$150+. It all depends on the company/page and how they choose to utilize their fans/likes.
Sorry pal, I am not that interested in the domestic politics of Pakistan so I have no clue on this, however it stands to reason that most of Imran Khan’s supporters are rather young and therefore more computer literate, and would be more amenable to social media networks such as Facebook. Unfortunately they don’t make up a majority of the voters in Pakistan and therefore got routed in the last elections.
Its also true that most surveys portray these very persons as anti US, which surprisingly is not true as they apparently like the US Embassy Facebook page and by extension the USA.
Sorry, I beg to differ. I do not think people are so stupid that they would post hate messages on the US Embassy Facebook page, knowing fully well that Law enforcement can easily trace them.
My husband has “Liked” that page…but trust me, he did not like it coz he is a fan of the US of A! He did it so that he can be more informed of what is going on…what they say that they are doing in Pakistan…he makes comments on some things he finds interesting..that is all…
Facebook is pretty much a part of the real world, you seem to forget that social media like Facebook has contributed to toppling governments in the not too distant past..
