Can a US born child who’s passport is expired but has a valid US birth certificate travel into Canada and back into the US?

getting into canada (if driving) might not be hard, but going back to the US would definitly be an issue…a passport or passport equivalent is needed to cross the border from canada to the US regardless of the mode of the travel: air, land or sea…

this page: http://gocanada.about.com/od/canadatravelplanner/qt/kids_passport.htm does say that along with parental consent, a certified copy of a childs birth certificate aged 15 yrs or younger would be accepted at land and sea crossings, but it’s a bit dated (may 09) compared to the first link in this post…

best to avoid a tricky situation i say, and simply get the passport renewed before going…i know urgent passports can be done in a day here, must be the same for the US

They didn't give any problem on either side. As long as mother's passport is valid

We want to travel to Canada but our 7 week old doesnt have his passport yet.. would birth certificate be okay on either side?

However, you should carry proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, as well as photo identification. If you are a permanent resident of Canada or the U.S, you should bring your Permanent Resident Card with you.

No. A birth certificate is worthless because it could belong to anyone. They need photo ID and however cute you may have been as a baby, you won’t match what you look like today. Same with the social security card - it isn’t photo ID and is too easily faked.
The DL with a computer chip will get you into Canada (and back into the US) ONLY if you are driving. And if there is anyone in the car with you, they also need the enhanced DL or a valid passpsort.

FYI I called the Canadian Border Services and I was informed that children under 16 dont need a passport (if entering by land) and they can enter and leave Canada on the US birth certificate with both parents.

so yes birth certificate isnt worthless.. please dont give out wrong information!

GTG, I ended up not going as I had mixed reports. Good to know that kids below 16 can travel back and forth.

However, I should renew.
