Well I did the interview two days a go and they said they really like me and sent me the offer letter today. They are moving really FAST!! I am not that happy with the money, I want to ask for more money but at the same time I dont want to lose this great opp.
Re: URGENT!! Help with salary negotiation
Schedule a call and discuss it over the phone. Be sure to tell them why you should get more. During the call be sure to the tell them why you are the best fit for the job, what makes you unique and how excited you are about the offer. Basically you need to make a case as if you were a litigator.
In addition to your base pay, you should look at the benefits package, i.e. the total compensation. Sometimes, base pay lower b/c of total package and you can an argument that some of the items in the benefits package are not beneficial to you, example your healthcare is covered by your husband/wife’s medical insurance and you should get that money as a base pay.
You can also work out a deal which can give you guaranteed raise after certain period of time, typical after 90 days (the typical probation period). If you work out any deal, make to get it in writing; ask for a new offer letter with details.
If they offer more bonus or other such incentives. Please remember that in most cases they are not guaranteed and 90% of the time, you don't get the full bonus anyways. Always negotiate for guaranteed funds, i.e. base pay.
Before you negotiate you should ask yourself, how badly you want this job and what are your alternatives. Anwer to this question will help you determine your negotiation style, aggressive vs passive
Re: URGENT!! Help with salary negotiation
These things should be done in person not over email.
Be honest, say you really like the position however the pay package isnt upto your desire.
Didnt you write down expected salary in your resume??
Its a very good thing to actually write down what you are after rather than leaving it blank.

I have to disagree, you should never mention salary requrements in your resume. Even during interview if they ask you that question, do not give a direct answer. Always tell them the total compensation package that you currently have (not just the base pay) and tell them that you are open. Salary should always be discussed after an official offer letter is recieved.
Re: URGENT!! Help with salary negotiation
See over here people are required to fill out a job application letter along with resume and CV and the first question on the application letter is what is your desireable salary
Now ofcourse it is also the rule for every advertised job to advertise the salary they are offering.

Good point, I would not be taking their medical benefits, so I can use that!!
Let me give you a bit more background info.....
Today the she called me and told me the offer in person and I told her that that the salary is a bit lower then what I was expecting but I will consider it and get back to her.... She said "let me know what you have in mind , we want to be fair to every one ..... I cant promise anything but it doesnt hurt trying"... So I think she was encouraging me to ask about the salary but since I didnt know what to say I told her I will think about it and let her know.....
Also, I feel more comfortable writing to them... Is that bad? Should I call insted?
Thanks every one for quick replies....
Re: URGENT!! Help with salary negotiation
Not sure where you are, but my recommendations for disclssing salary requirements in resume are based on US market ONLY. They may not apply to other locales

That's great news. Basically she told you that they can offer a better salary :) Now that you have spoken with her on the phone, sending her an email is not a bad idea. BUT you need to follow up with a call and walk through the email with her. Be sure to call her 10 - 15 minutes after sending the email. During you call do tell that you will followup the next day if you don't hear back from her. Do not let this stagnate.
Good Luck,
Re: URGENT!! Help with salary negotiation
BTW, you don't need to tell her an exact number, a percentage is often sufficient and less akward.

Ok!!! I have an update... Since I told her that the salary is a bit lower than what I was expecting she spoke to hiring manager and sent me a 4% higher offer letter.... I didnt need to ask for more money... Should I say thanks to ALLAH and go ahed and accept or should I still negotiate... this is 3% lower than what I was going to ask for... or would be happy to have.... Please advise...
Re: URGENT!! Help with salary negotiation
That means that they really like you :) congrdulations ... if you really feel that it is lower than the market value then go ahead and ask for bit more. Otherwise just go ahead and accept the offer.
There is a middle ground as well. You can setup a call with HR and tell them that it is lower than what are expecting but you are excited about the company and the job and would like to accept the offer, provided they can give you a 3% raise after the 90 day probation period. This is a fair deal and it allows the company to see you in action before they go further.
If you like this job and company, I would say go ahead and take it without any more negotiations. Money is not the only aspect of the job, long term growth, learning, happiness, etc. are all equally important. You can always ask for more money in the middle of the year if you want, there are no set rules :)
Re: URGENT!! Help with salary negotiation
Thank you very much ALL!! and especially Boston... I think I will accept the offer since this location is so close to home and the people there seem nice. Wish me luck with the job. :)

Re: URGENT!! Help with salary negotiation
Before you go, get online and read up on salary ranges for your current occupation, including typical benefits packages, pension plans, stock options, number of sick days, and number of vacation days. Knowing how other colleagues in your field are compensated will help you form a general idea of the range you expect to get, and you will be better equipped when negotiating.
When you get invited to a job interview, or move on to the hiring phase, the last thing you want to do is tell them what you think you want up front. This puts the employer in a power position and the number will only go down from there.
Instead, try to avoid discussing these figures until they are prepared to make you an offer
When a prospective employer asks you what you're looking for pay-wise, tell them it's the job opportunity that matters most. Follow this by asking what they have budgeted. Now YOU are in a power position and they are in the hotseat, having to give a business-like answer to your simple question. Don't worry if the figure is lower than you hoped. Budgets are always adjusted, and if they aggressively recruit you, the available amount for your position could increase rapidly.
Once you've explored all of the options or have simply been asked for a salary requirement point blank, let your interviewer know the range you are looking at based on your research.
If you aren't aggressively looking for a job, then perhaps you can afford to tell them no. Be honest with yourself about what you really need versus what you think you want. Don't get too greedy. If they really want you, they will bend over backwards to make a deal with you.
Remember, you are a shrewd force of negotiating fury. If they make an offer, do your best to take it with a poker face no matter how good or bad it is.
TALENT: Yes!!!!
Make them wonder what you're thinking. You have the option to think it over before saying yes or no. And because they don't know what you're thinking, this sometimes causes employers to sweeten the deal. Remember that you are a talented, valuable individual who deserves to be compensated justly.
