Urgent dawat help!

I have a couple who just returned from Hajj coming in for dinner tomorrow evening.

I’m making:

Mutton Biryani
Chicken Curry
Fried Fish
Naan

Kheer

So help me choose what type of raita, and do I need to make another dish?

Re: Urgent dawat help!

Sounds yummy as is. If you want, you can also include one vegetarian dish.

Hmm raitas:

boondi raita

cucumber raita is light and refreshing

baingan raita (although it might be kinda heavy)

Check this website out, contains a variety of raitas. There’s a couple containing avocado that sound interesting:

Re: Urgent dawat help!

My mom used to make this type of "raita"--boondi with diced onions and tomatoes and dhania OR boiled/chopped aloo and chickpeas...and the usual masalas (imli, chaat masala, garam masala etc)...

Re: Urgent dawat help!

^We make the same as well...topped with imili ki chutney....be we call it chaat. But for a meal, we take everything else out and just keep the boondi. I personally like the chaat better.

Re: Urgent dawat help!

Hmmmm...

Should I make a veg dish also? Something potato-y?

Re: Urgent dawat help!

There’s other vegetables? :hmmm:

Re: Urgent dawat help!

Ya but I just bough a HUGE bag of potatoes from Costco and that’s all the veggies I have at this moment in time :naak:!

Re: Urgent dawat help!

What kind? Idaho? Russet?

if i was at a davat i wouldn’t touch a vegetable unless it was in the raita. :naak:

Re: Urgent dawat help!

They are golden potatoes. I could make masala roasted potatoes....not that I know how to, but it sounds coolish.

Re: Urgent dawat help!

cover them with masalas and stuff and bake :naak:

Re: Urgent dawat help!

What masalas? Gimme an idea.

Re: Urgent dawat help!

maslaz masalaz

Re: Urgent dawat help!

a very easy and simple raita that i really like is..onion, cucumber and tomatoes chopped up really fine in yogurt with salt, black pepper and cumin...goes very well with rice and curries...you can make chickpeas/channay and add the achar masalas in it

Re: Urgent dawat help!

Sara, oh chup ker and list the masalas :emmy:

Re: Urgent dawat help!

You could make aloo tikkis with your potatoes

Or if you want to roast them...I made this recipe up for Thanksgiving:

If I am thinking of the right potatoes...I think they're smaller. So cut them in cubes and lay them out in a tray. For mine, I kept the skin on.

I got a bowl and put in olive oil, salt, black pepper, dried basil leaves (you can also use rosemary), kuti mirch, bhuna zeera powder and some garam masala.

I whipped the mixture and coated my potatoes with it. Baked it for about 30 minutes until they were nice and brown.

Re: Urgent dawat help!

The best is Tzatziki.

Re: Urgent dawat help!

You could rub the par-boiled pieces with oil and a mixture of red chilli flakes, zeera and dhania powder, salt and put them in the oven.. you could even add garlic paste to the dried masala's.

One raita that's always a 'hit' is a cucumber raita with a 'baghaar'. Grate the cucumbers and add it to seasoned yoghurt and 'baghaar' it with mustard seeds, zeera and curry leaves.

Re: Urgent dawat help!

I make aloo same way without oven i.e. on stove and serve with pooris...they are yummy.

Re: Urgent dawat help!

You can try Aalo achari.. easiest recipe I’ve come across so far and very yummy, my fav quick fix these days.

Here it is :

The only alteration I do is that in step 2 I just add the masala part of achar and not the mango/lemon pieces.

Re: Urgent dawat help!

I like the idea of either aloo ki tikkiya...or....the roasted potatoes. It's simple...delicious....and not heavy. Plus, it's not a time consuming dish either. Go for it :)
